midnight show at the Steve Allen Theatre in Hollywood

Common Rotation played a mini-set at the beginning of the Tomorrow Show at the Steve Allen Theatre at midnight Saturday night/Sunday morning. Lineup was Adam, Eric, Jordan, Ken Beck on cojone and shakers, Matt Young on stand-up bass and Mark McConville on pedal steel. I didn't bring a notebook, so this is going to be a sketchy report.

Opener was "Union Maid." Jordan played a somewhat different, new trumpet riff toward the end.

Next was "On the Idol," which had great harmonies.

Then came the song that has a title that eludes me every time -- "Surround Face"? "Surround Me"? "Drown Me Out"? -- but it got a lot of laughs, as the band played with pauses, starting and stopping and reacting to each other.

Finale was "Bitter Honey." The MC came and made kazoo noises into the mike during the song. I know this was the intro into an evening of comedy, but this wasn't funny so much as just a sonic distraction. Otherwise, fine rendition.

And that's it for tonight!

Thanks for the report, Shapenew. That song is called "Surround" on the set lists.
