set report

September 13 2009, 3:45 AM

I was a little distracted during tonight's set, due to the fact that, while I was seated at the table after the Thrilling Adventure ended and while CR was setting up, the waiter accidentally knocked a full glass of ice water down the front of my shirt and pants (and doused my notebook). He kindly got me some towels, but I was nevertheless fairly soaked and spent the set standing in back so that I could at least create a stance where the wet cloth was not clinging to me.

In any event:

The lineup for the evening was Adam, Eric, Jordan, Mark McConville, Jillinda Palmer, Davey the drummer and, for half the set, Dan Bern. The set was recorded for an upcoming live album.

The set started with the song I can never recall the proper title for, but it ends with "That's Entertainment." Eric played a thrumming acoustic guitar, Jordan was on banjo, Mark on pedal steel -- Adam and Eric traded lead vocals. It sounded great and intense.

Adam and Eric likewise took lead vocals on "Union Maid," with Adam also on harmonica, Mark on pedal steel, Jordan starting on trumpet and switching to banjo for a nice spare feeling on the verse, then coming back for major killer trumpet on the outtro.

"Surround" was very audience participation, with people squeaking and yelling words during the pauses (as invited to do by Adam). The funniest shout-out was from someone who cried, "You lie!" Jordan's trumpet and Mark's pedal steel created a jazzy feel.

This is an older CR song we hadn't heard in awhile -- I think it's called "I'll Be Around" or "Bluebird." Adam was on sac, Jordan on trumpet and Eric on guitar and lead vocals, with Davey on drums and Mark on stand-up bass.

Next was a powerful rendition of "How to Lose."

For a change, Adam took the first set of lead vocals on "My Kingdom," with Dan Bern taking the second verse and Eric the third. Eric and Dan both had their accoustic guitars, Mark was on pedal steel, Jillinda on accordion and there was a pianist whose name I didn't catch. Adam played harmonica when not singing and the drums contributed powerfully to this performance.

Dan Bern took lead on "I'm Not From Around Here," a song from the upcoming movie "Drones." Mark was on stand-up bass, Adam on harmonica, Jordan on banjo and Jillinda on accordion.

From what was said, evidently "92 Mics" will be in "Drones" also. Mark stayed on stand-up bass, Jordan was on banjo and Eric and Dan were both on their acoustic guitars.

Another Dan Bern song from "Drones" is "Love Makes All the Other Worlds Go Round." Dan did lead vocals, with Adam on glock and Jillinda on accordion. Dan's guitar developed a problem early on -- as this was Dan's sound, Eric courteously swapped with him and sang back-up without playing.

The next song was also a Dan Bern composition, though not from "Drones": "Obama in Osamaland." Adam was on harmonica, Jordan on banjo, Jillinda on accordion and Mark on stand-up bass.

Then the group performed Dan's "I'm Having a Party," followed by "The Voice of Vin Scully."

Jordan was on banjo, Adam on harmonica and Jillinda on accordion, with Adam and Jordan doubling up at one mike and Eric and Jillinda sharing the other to sing backup vocals on "Stop What You're Doing and Breathe."

Eric took his guitar back for the off-mic song, which was an audience singalong of "This Land Is Your Land," which was great.

And that was it for tonight!

Oh NO Shapenew, wet clothes syndrome is not normally a good thing, but thank you for your report and as for you Frankie I salute you also, an ear worm before work can only be a good thing for me. For the people I work with, not so much!

Thank you both really rather a lot, and of cause if the boys ever grace our shores again we will reciprocate the favour back !
