Hi Eals that was very cool indeed
I had the privilege - and planning - to indulge in three shows in total to make up a reasonable
Common Rotation set length (nothing is enough, right?...ahhh for the days of those 20+ song long Troubadour sets in London!) but as I am now quite the Dan Fan and as he's only on his own for about three or four songs before the band join him again and by join I mean fill the room with their music and harmonies - I have to admit I love the pairing of these shows
ECSTATIC ears, smiley face and laughing my head off. That's a Dan Bern/Common Rotation show. I just feel sometimes I need to learn a bit more about baseball Hah!
(many a Dan sporty number). I forgot this was the first night CR had joined Dan this tour? as he has been touring solo up until today. This explains why they are also laughing rather a lot? Especially when Dan set about casting Osama In Obamaland, to make it into a blockbuster Hollywood movie. Haha! No spoilers. But ZZTop?... They will be played by ZZTop
And The Tin Angel. Love it there! The venue is upstairs and it's small and narrow with a tiny stage that means four musicians can barely stand elbow to elbow and a Jordan needs to turn sideways sometimes if a banjo/guitar collision is to be avoided.
So there were two shows. And I only realised when one of my mates flying in had asked if I had booked the early or late one. UM PARDON?? WHATDIDYOUSAY? (and squee and stuff!) So on top of the 7.30pm ticket already secured, we of course HAD to get the 10.30pm too, that had been added much later to the scheduling.
The tables had mostly been reserved for the early show, by people dining i ntheir restaurant. We found one left. If it had been more to the rear, it would have been behind the bar. But the most excellent lady who WAS behind that bar was beautiful! I didn't even have to say a word - or pout - or ANYTHING (honest!) - She found out there were going to be 8 of us coming for the late show and just reserved us a table, without the dining requirement. You have? Wow! Thank you so much! What a superstar.
Both shows were such massive fun and sounded incredible. I have no set lists. I have no recordings (until New York). I have no photos (I know someone who does) just a befuddled memory. Definitely Truth In Advertising (yay!) and Life Is Long (also yay!) were played in show one and I have 2/3 of the band to thank for swinging the vote to play Routine in the second?
which may be getting to the end of its stage-life, but which I adore. Thankfully Curt Smith via The UM Archive will let me relive it a few more times. New songs/recent Union Maids .. humming Angelena as I go about my business, seems to be order of the day, at the moment!! All Smiles was beeeeautiful to have back: verse-shared .. Adam>Dan>Eric. Dan liked to make his own words up, I noticed
Ooohhhh AND in Dan's set one of! - I just remembered - they played my favourite track from The Dan Bern Live In Los Angeles CD The Golden Voice of Vin Scully. Colour me over-excited and Cheshire-catlike. If you haven't heard it yet I recommend an mp3 store or a Dan Bern website near you soon. CR feature on a handful of tracks and two songs from Drones feature. The NEW Live In New York CD is even more gorgeous and the fact it has Isner & Mahut on it is almost worth the disc price on it's own
! New York is the full-on W/COMMON ROTATION CD.
One thing sadly missing from the early set was thankfully back at the end of the night. Off-mic/in-audience highlight. Hello
Tonight we had a Deportees (-- I Wanna Hold Your Hand.
At this time in the evening you will find me melted away. That puddle of bliss, right there. Under the table. That's me. Followed by me alternately talking gibberish and getting tongue-tied - just rendered speechless! Je suis Muppet. It was good to be back.
Adam, Eric, Jordan - and Dan
Worth every mile. Every time.
And You know I'm becoming quite the big fan of that lap steel guitar
Am now scouring the internet again for competitions to win USA flights! - East or West I'll make do
