| >Regarding your website/characters...been following your progress these past months, and am wishing you all the best! Got some questions:
>1. How did you manage to put the "do not reproduce" line over the images? (Maybe its basic -- sorry I don't know.)
It's not at all basic to ask some of those things. I regard well peoples asking because I think that it is too much an hermetical domain even with the propention of the information.
Oki, first of all. It doesn't look like it but the image has been done in Photoshop and been not defenitive, I could rework the thing that hasn't been in my taste. (The entire bg colors were all orange and Brâhk who's my fav black guy wasn't black enough for example.)
So while making the Art Director on it, I made myself a 1024 x 780 desktop of before and after my AD and come to think of it, I made myself a smaller one in between before the really final result (There is never a real final result, even on ReBoot with 4 versions of The Tiff.) so I putted the usual warning in the Photoshop log before I knew whith who I teamed-up and opened a layer just for text only and putted an alpha of 40% on it so it went transparent and collapsed it in one before reduction for internet use. ^_^ I bet any paint program can do it at some degree but I'm used with Photoshop and it came with my scan. (Lucky-me.)
>2. How much of the rights do you lose over your characters as you go into production, having others illustrate it and the sponsors/etc holding some veto power over it?
I don't loose any of the rights actually but my second producer want to remove me my AD wich would be a lot of money if the project is accepted by broadcasters. But it's been 8 years I'm on them. So the prods warned me Broadcasters may be really rude to me, but at least at this step, there making a good deal and leaving me some loose. I'm happy as long as the plot/storyarc/concept/main characters and world are intact and the prod told me if he had to change anything, he would just go and see another concept instead of buying it. (He told me basically that he loved the concept. So that's maybe why the protection he made for me all over my contract. Once you buy one of my universe, you instantly wins my loyalty! ~_^)
My main Producer treats me so well I inherit AD, Writing, Editing and a percentage over derivated products and if his buiseness close, my projects returns to me. I have to admit, he gave me ten times what I expected in contract, so if the project works... I'll be pampered a lot. The trio you saw on the picture is almost exactly the originals I made myself for the 2D project. I had to ask Benoît to gimme a break with the trio/quatuor and promissed him to not make rotations of the other charries. He went on doing almost all of them as they were upon rotations with some slight biting-my-nails stuff, but I'm always keeping my words when I give them and it's 2D before modelisation and just as presentation.
But as the Main producer told-me to be certain I understood, the final result is NEVER predictable. Kind-of his way to warn me that the control I have over it, is provisory by the co-producers and broadcasters standards.
Crossing fingers
Just let's hope it stays that way trough the whole process... I know my horror tales. Sometimes when you see a BAD cartoon, it isn't just always one that was supposed to be badly made. But it can be rotten along the way and get destroyed before even producing a pilot.
>3. How did you copyright your characters? I guess Canadian law is different from the US's, so my real question is: how did you get international copyrights? Are there other ways of protecting your creations as you get ready to broadcast them, especially since they are sitting around on the 'net in the meantime?
By Canadian rules, my caracters has been copywritted at least 3 times since 1995 after the death of my companion. Both the visual, the concept and the bible. That's why Ben, Bob and me can get on them a lot and walks on eggs because Ben want to recreate them from scratch as they were really tested and retested and have their reasons to be what they are and how they are. (There's a lot in the plot that have to do with costuming, physical comedy and planning trough their costumes symbolism etc...)
But both Ben and me respects each others in this. I think I'll cut him some more loose.
thinking of what it means for my horse and dragon and bite nails
>(I'm writing this up at the top of the forum so you won't miss my questions...)
Thanks it was efficient and got my immediate attention. Actually I got a bit scared a few nanos; nobody really seems to really care enough to write my nick in a heading. ^_^ I almost rereaded it 3 times thinking if I opened it I would read some; "You owe me a thousand box!" LOL
