Response to conclusions so far.

 

He needs to use point more than twice per move.

actually I'm not sure if he intended to allow for speeds greater than 1 or not. Possibly, the FOR loops were meant to check each pixel along the edge in the direction of motion.

Also, I had put DEFINT A-Z in the main program, but had forgotten to put it in the procedure, which was still using DEFSNG A-Z by default. That led to a temporary bug for me in which speed was 2 separate variables.
