Murphy's

February 23 2007, 7:42 AM

Kingsdale Lazurus' record department was cool. I remember getting several albums there including Moody Blues and George Carlin albums. On the far east side of the Lane Avenue shopping center, I use to get records, particuarly 45's at Murphy's.

I loved Murphy's ...

February 24 2007, 11:54 PM

Didn't matter what you were looking for, you could always find it there.

I probably bought a dozen pairs of those cheap black and white converse tennis shoes there, never more than $2.99. Now they sell for up to $50!

Murphy's was great. Loved the soda fountain and their candy dept. with the cotton candy and big bags of popcorn. And I spent almost all my allowance all the time buying 45's in their record dept.

The record department was on the 2nd floor, along the south side wall, and between the

two escalators. I'm pretty sure the UP went from the Tremont side to the NW Blvd side, so you would turn to the right.

Yes, it did open in 1970. Anyone remember the carnevale that used to set up every year on the north side of the shopping center until Lazarus was built?

Record department

I can confirm that the record department was on the south wall near the down escalator, where there are linens now. The west wall had the teen clothing department. Lots of orange shag carpet!

I was wondering if anyone else was going to say Waves. They were a total rip-off, but we all still went there. I'm pretty sure that's where I picked up my Arrested Development cassettes and later my Hootie and the Blowfish CDs. Yep, I was just that awesome.

Waves ( wave good-bye to your cash)

March 19 2007, 8:45 PM

I bought a few over priced CD's there myself, it was just too convienient.. It was National Record (rip-off) Mart before that in the 80's, and over priced as well.

Remember Buzzards??

April 24 2007, 11:34 AM

Wasn't there a record store on Henderson called Buzzards or Buzzard's Nest? I also remember another record store on Morse Road. It had a signature wooden orange crate, but I the name has slipped my mind. What was it?

Was Bill Botkin's the store with the little rooms you could go into and listen to a record before you bought it? I remember that one very well.

I don't remember any little rooms. It was really a pretty small store and I just remember one room.

JP Snodgrass

March 5 2007, 1:25 PM

JP Snodgrass at Lane Avenue sold some records, jeans in bins all around the store - and a guy that worked there named Jeff sold more than that - thus the name JP SnodGRASS.

April 21 2007, 4:50 PM

There was a small record store call "Bob's Records" at the far west end of Lane Ave. shopping center, facing Lombard's Furniture. Used to buy 45s there and pick up my WCOL "All Hit Music Survey."

There was another record store at Kingsdale in the basement of the Union. I think you could access it from outside near the original Limited store.

And who can forget Peaches? To this day I don't remember where it was, but it was somewhere in Northland (161 or Morse.)

I remember Peaches Records and Tapes

April 22 2007, 2:06 PM

I believe it WAS on Morse Road. They had those giant album covers (Oops, did I say album? Yeah, that's right, back when music was music) on the outside walls of the building and also lining the upper part of the walls inside.

My brother and I waited in front of that store for hours to buy concert tickets, many times.

I also liked Buzzard's Nest for albums and ... cough, cough ... other stuff.
