The Golden Bear Touchdown Club, a 501C (3) [pending] support group consisting of UAHS alumni, past, present and future parents of players, as well as fans of the Golden Bear Nation, is being formed in Upper Arlington.

Led by President Kirk Herbstreit and Vice-President John Epitropoulos, the Golden Bear Touchdown Club will work to increase enthusiasm for and support of the UAHS football team, maximize attendance at the games, and provide funding to continually improve and enhance the Golden Bear football program.

The Golden Bear Touchdown Club will hold an organizational meeting on Tuesday, June 2 at 6:00 pm in the Upper Arlington High School Cafeteria, where attendees will have the opportunity to become a member and hear more about the organization from Kirk Herbstreit and John Epitropoulos. The public is invited.

The founders of the Touchdown Club believe in the concept of paying forward, and recognize that Upper Arlington High School's football program is a vehicle for the development of strong character, the encouragement of achievement, and the enhancement of the future success of our players. The Touchdown Club's dedication and contributions will make it possible to continually improve and enhance the football program experience at Upper Arlington High School.

The Touchdown Club plans to promote the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football series. In a nationally televised game on ESPN on Saturday, August 29 at noon, the Golden Bears will play against last year's defending National Champions, Ft Lauderdale's St. Thomas Aquinas at the Ohio Stadium.

Keep the fire burning

May 27 2009, 10:31 PM

Great job, men, Trying to figure how many years ago Slaeger, Morgan, et al, and I went to work. Goal: Major weight /lockeroom facility. Never will forget when Rick said (and I exactly quote)," I'm just dumb enough to think that we can win another championship here". Help from many former Bears. 2002 State champions (even w/ D. Mayne. yikes!). Set the tide. Now with Golden ... I feel pretty good.
So, new leaders, step up! How very important is that positive experience for your young men of working your ass off, saying "no" to many negative things, and realizing success due to your effort (May your success be in proportion to your effort). Oh, almost forgot ...Give em hell, Bears!

The weight room

May 28 2009, 12:17 AM

And the weight room is amazing! It's as good as it gets. Thank you for all your efforts!

You can see a photo of the facility and read all about it and see the schedule, right here at the new UAGoldenBears.com web site:

John, I hope you'll come to the June 2 meeting and become a part of this group. As an alum and former football player, you should be in on the ground floor of this organization!

We're looking for alums from all classes, parents of current and upcoming player-hopefuls, and anyone who is a fan of the Golden Bears!

Yo Kingsboro,

Good advice! Corrections, the bears won the State title in 2000 not 2002. Too bad they couldn't match the three in a row you guys won in the 60's! Also, it's S-l-a-g-e-r....right? I hope you just had a couple of drinks in you when you wrote that old buddy. GO BEARS! (old and young) and Keep the Fire Burning U.A.!!

Right you are

Bad enough to misspell Slager in my earlier post. Before I was told by Anon, I had realized my incredible omission of John Fickell, who was absolutely THE leader and orchestrator of the magnificent project.
John was amazing in the way he could get things done. Bless him.
