Haa haa, that was pretty funny. I bought one a couple of years ago for my '66 and just as you found, I had to remove the column collar (behind the steering wheel) and cut around a quarter inch off of it to get the wheel to fit. I tried to do a pretty careful job so it wouldn't look like Hell and it did turn out pretty good. You can't tell unless you REALLY scrutinize it. Of course there is quite a bit of work yet to be done to my interior so you'd never notice because of all the other shortcomings.
Now your horn thing has me wondering whether I may yet have that issue because my horn currently doesn't work. I haven't tried to find out why (yet). The good news is that to my delight the turn signal return works fine.
I love that wheel so it's definitely worth the minor hassles. It's a 500% improvement over the hum-drum original.
