Donald Rumsfeld to Profit Millions from Bush Spending on Avian Bird Flu Pandemic

president bush unveiled a $7.1 billion plan yesterday to guard against an avian flu pandemic, calling for the stockpiling of 20 million doses of vaccine and enough anti-viral drugs to protect health care and public-safety workers in case of an outbreak...

the prospect of a bird flu outbreak may be panicking people around the globe, but it's proving to be very good news for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and other politically connected investors in Gilead Sciences, the California biotech company that owns the rights to Tamiflu, the influenza remedy that's now the most-sought after drug in the world.

Rumsfeld served as Gilead's chairman from 1997 until he joined the bush admin. in 2001, and he still holds a Gilead stake valued at between $5 million and $25 million, according to federal financial disclosures filed by Rumsfeld.

I wish I read more. Howcome only one company in Europe has the patent on the remedy? Those bastards!!! I read a company in China was willing and able to make the vaccine for the bird flu but the bloody company would not allow it. They said it takes a year to produce. Just another bullshit day in America. Fear for profit my ass!!!! I'd rather die from the flu than pay for the vaccine...

Let us remember who we can thank for so few pharacutical manufacturers in the U.S.

Us.

Yes, the law suit happy people of the good old U.S.A. We have chased away all the manufactureres of most of our medications to Europe (where there are laws to protect for the benefit of all) because we think its OK to sue everybody that comes down the pike. So, pat yourselves on the shoulders and be thankful that ANY company is willing to research and manufacture drugs for you in America.

well i understand from my allergist it's going to be difficult for the virus to mutate into an airborne cooty, so in other words - a pandemic prolly ain't gonna happen.

our government is trying to scare us (again).
scared voters won't question why so much $$ was spent on a worthless vaccine.
rumsfeld will walk away with millions of tax payers dollars because we were ignorant enough to let it happen.

The "spin" has begun....
The best way to divert the nation's focus on the mishaps of Bush's administration is to cause wide spread panic by creating a potential "pandemic". Bush is also trying to cover his sorry ass from the hurricaine Katrina fiasco by being this caring, well prepared, people president.

Unless you've researched every other government in the world, you cannot say that we have the best one... Just because the US is the richest country in the world, it does not mean that it's the best! You've been brainwashed just like everyone else... Try living in another culture sometime- you'll see things from different perspective. And by the way, you can't say I'm unpatriotic- I'm a veteran. I gave up 4 years of my life for this country!!!

everyone needs to just quit complaining like little babies. things are not perfect with our government but it's one of the best ones out there. be happy that women can vote here and that women can chose whoever they wanna marry and that women dont have there viginas sown together or there clit removed so they dont feel peasure! You're the one that needs to see the big picture.... If we just sit around and act happy, the politicians have won! Do you really want things to get worse? It is the people that can change things... Re: feathering their nests

November 12 2005, 9:10 PM

I know you're right? Um, no. Would I be arguing if I thought you were right?

If our government is so great, then why do we have all these problems? Don't you think that a truly great country wouldn't go around boasting to the rest of the world about how great it is?

You want us to stop complaining- why? There is no middle ground- either we complain and do something about it, or we sit around and do nothing. What do YOU suggest we do? What is YOUR great answer to our situation besides "stop complaining"?

Don't get me wrong- there are a lot of worse places to be, and we do take a lot for granted. But if we stop questioning the politicians.... I'd hate to think of where we would end up.

Re: feathering their nests

November 15 2005, 4:02 PM

We're fed up with the state of things, and rallying for everyone who is fed up to band together. Even if it is in a Cure forum, this is how we start to get things done. I do not like where I see our government heading, and the vocalizing and writing down of these opinions and finding like minds is the first step. And I'm totally glad and appreciative of that gift of freedom to speak out about it.

We have potential to have a great government, but as things are now, it is not. Money speaks louder than ethics, for example. No, I wouldn't care to live in several dozen other places, but humanity could all have the potential to be great - instead of just the few who were lucky(?) enough to have been born in this country...

Jingoism does not equal maturity. The ability to see our own flaws and to protect the freedoms we have, and to correct what is damaging is necessary.

It is the fact that I tried to use my voice in the last elections, and in the end, it didn't change anything that has made it necessary to keep speaking about my dissatisfaction and to keep trying to band enough people who are also dissatisfied to tip the scales in the next elections.

It's fine that you think this country is great, and great that you get to tell us. That's about the last right we all have. I will not shut up, thank you very much.

It is a Cure forum and we are Cure fans. We've been here for a long time and quite frankly have talked about everything the Cure has done a hundred times over. The music, your favorite song/album, How cute Robert is, blah blah blah and well, there aint much going on in the Cure right now. Until news of the new album comes out and Robert delays it over and over again (come on you all know he will) There is nothing to talk about without talking about the same stuff. So this is interesting. Get over it anon.

Geez.

Re: feathering their nests

I agree amy, pyra, and scared. I do appreciate being ABLE to bitch if I so please, and I do, often. I don't like the way things are being done in our government, but it doesn't mean I don't appreciate the freedom I have. I know the US government has its good points, but it has a hell of a lot of bad. Cash is king unfortunately, in this derranged democracy we have. Those with money have the power, it's a sad fact. I work for the gov, and I see firsthand how everyone's tax dollars are spent (not entirely, but to some degree). I am DEFINITELY NOT a fan of GW 'Saddle up the horses, we're gonna get us some terrorists' Bush. Why does the US feel it absolutely necessary to be the world police?? If a country decides to fuck with us, we should fuck with them, otherwise, we should mind our own god damn business.

I don't mind nationalism, and having pride for where you're from at all, but the thing that pisses me off to no end is when you get these tunnelvision fucks that always say how wonderful and amazing our country is, when they have never even left their own town to explore all that their country has to offer, then make an educated decision.

Can we ban anons?? You know, make it where people have to sign in to post?? I know it may be a pain in the ass sometimes, but it seems we have a lot of people infiltrating the boards with their views (which is cool), but they shouldn't be able to hide behind a veil of secrecy by not logging in.

BTW, I really don't care what anonymous person I just offended, that's my right as an American, right? Free speech is a two edged sword.

It would take one hell of a terrible candidate to get me to vote Republican... Especially if Dubya's brother runs. I'd probably end up voting Libertarian if it came down to it!

You know in the UK, the Liberal Democrats are actually the third major party and are slowly gaining more and more seats in Parliament.... Our MP when I was there was Liberal Democrat, and he was a good guy- even took the train to London (100-150 miles away) instead of driving or flying.

Have any of you heard of the Monster Raving Loony Party from the UK? Believe it or not, they occasionally win a few local elections!!!

In Five Years We'll Read The Truth

November 20 2005, 7:33 AM

Too bad we dont have a forum where no one can post annon. Then everyone with an opinion would have to reveal themselves. Oh but wait if we do that then the govt has the right under the Patriot act to track us and make sure we are not terrorists. So yeah we are not that bad. If a foreigner came up to me and asked me "Describe United States," I would tell them it's a big corporation. And you can vote and sometimes they have to do what we vote on. But sometimes we vote and we can't trace our vote.
"In Five Years We'll Read The Truth"

But the govt can trace our every movement. Anyone else know about the black box they put in brand new cars? It can tell someone where you go and when you go anytime of day or night. No I am not making this up. Progressive Ins is considering using it for the good driver discount.

How are we the richest country in the world? Our national debt is in the trillions. The personal debt is ??? High I'm sure. We live off of our own credit.
Annon, it's your right to your own opinion. The only reason I love this country is because it's where my loved ones are. The govt is a global disaster. And everyday it gets worse. That's not a quick response. It's the truth. I admire Johnny Depp who just gave up and raised his family elsewhere. At the same time I admire those who stay here and do whatever it takes to make the country what we want it to be. And it looks like Bush is not doing well. This is a perfect time to stand up and make a difference.
