Not 100% sure (maybe someone can help!). But I think it has something to do with their love of football (soccer to us yanks). So they called themselves "Team Cure" like a soccer team. Think they might play against the road crew whilst on tour.
Read all this someplace years ago. So dunno if any of it's true. But I'm sure the whole "Team Cure" thingy was just for fun.

yeah i know that theyre pretty big on football but i thought that this was like something for charity. oh well, i think it would have been amusing to see them play anyway

No, Pyra, it has nothing to do with the street team. Actually it is briefly mentioned in "Ten Imaginary Years" Page 90, right side:
"In September, The Cure (now dubbed Team Cure and kitted out accordingly in American Football shirts) toured Britian and on the 12th, played Wembley Arena for the first time."
