Greetings -

Does anybody have ANY information to prove or disprove the notion that there were Marmon-Herrington Mk. IV armored cars in use in Western Europe or Italy during WW2? A follow-up question would be, where DID they serve for certain? Thanks!

Middle East for sure

October 24 2002, 2:07 PM

Mike,

As far as I can ascertain, the South African Recce Car Mk IV was only used in the Middle East, and mostly after WW2. Users included Jordan (The Arab Legion, four armoured car battalions), Greece, Cyprus (20 to 30 still in service in the 1980s) and prossibly some more. South Africa used them as well, of course.

I have never found any references to them being used in Western Europe or Italy, but I would love to be convinced by someone who has proof!

Regards,
Hanno

I have just purchased a Mk 4 for restoration in England it was one of 2 that were imported from India, they had been in a scrap yard sonce the late 40's.

i am at the moment trying to trace the history, asi strip the paint i may get some unit markings which will help to locate the vehicles service.

MH in Italy - unlikely

July 15 2008, 8:31 PM

The only units who used the MH during 1943/4 was the Artillery units of the 6 SA Armd Div.(7/23 and 1/6)

"A" vehicle returns for this period show a handfull of MH Mk II Op's being used for training in North Africa until middle Feb 44. By the end of Feb 44 they are no longer reflected on the returns. It seems that at this time the Daimler and White Scout cars started to arrive and this is reflected in the returns.

It may be possible that one or two went over to Italy with the Division as part of the echelon but I still have to see a photo or find a return showing this. Until then it seems as if all MH were handed back to dumps in North Africa before the Division left for Italy. Nothing is impossible and I keep on looking.

Regards

William
