I usually prefer a book with great character development, but didn't mind the lack when I read IWD. To me, I didn't read FR books for the "characters" I read them as a greater view into the world as a whole.
Drizzt was an ok character but he seemed to much of a "woe is me, I am a minority" mentality that Salvatore saeemed to paint him with. Not to say that Drizzt acted that way, but that Salvatore seemed to want to have the rest of the world view him in that light at least. Since I can't stand the "woe is me I am "special"" mentality, and frankly liked Atremis and Wulfgar better, I never even read the Dark Elf trilogy. shrug
Not saying you're wrong, just elaboraing a little (and I finally finished my Mid-Term, only 4700 words just for 9 questions, ick!).
