Do I want henchman?

I have read about how henchman are invaluable for beating the game but so far (and I've only completed the prison area) I have had no trouble with just my familiar (panther) and my dire boar. Don't you lose experience if you have a henchman? And does anyone know if I lose experience by having a familiar and/or summoned creature to help me fight? Thanks.
