So many people I talk to liked Matrix, but I can't figure out the reason why. I thought it was an incomprehensible mess of a movie. I couldn't understand what was going on half the time & Keanu Reeves is such a cruddy actor that he ruins most every movie he is in. Keanu Reeves as the Buddha?
Why cast this moron as one of the great spiritual figures in history? Keanu Reeves as a nuclear physicist? He can't act his way out of a paper bag, & yet otherwise discerning people with actual taste like Matrix? Go figure! I suppose by seeing this movie I was meant to really seriously contemplate what reality in fact is. Whether or not most everything is the "matrix". What the nature of reality is in our modern world. I have a sense that maybe that was what they wished me to think about. I just kept wanting them to give me a story line I could follow & characters I could care about. For special effects this movie is somewhat worth it, but style versus substance can only take you so far. If the main character is as wooden an actor as K.R. it's pointless.

dood, tha matrix was great.
ill agree with the fact that keanu pretty much sucks as an actor, but the movie itself was incredible. i dont understand how you couldnt follow the story line. maybe you should'nt get drunk before you go see a movie.

I think the fact that I wrote something which you know
deep down is true is what allows you to cast such aspersions on my character. I was sober when I saw
the movie, but perhaps being drunk would have made me enjoy it a bit more. How is it that on the one hand Keanu is in some kind of amniotic fluid, then he's a marshall arts expert, then he's just a regular everyday working stiff. Lack of focus makes this film a mess. Perhaps it's just the fact that Mr. Reeves is such a tosser. I challenge you to explain the plot (so called) of this movie in a cogent manner. If you can do that I'll give it a 2nd chance . . . maybe. If you just say, "but dude, like it's so cool how he jumped up and flew across the room . ." I can go to an arcade and play "Street Fighter" if I want to see that sort of thing. In any case, the current trend of making video games into full feature length movies is pathetic ~ Sara Croft Tomb Raider -- need I say more. This genre is for geeks who sit in an arcade all day & consider a bag of corn chips and a can of coke as a balanced whole meal.

ok here goes:
the basic plot of the movie is that what we see here and now is not real. that we are actually tied into a computer program called the "matrix" and in reality are just floating in some tube and fueling the "robots" with our own body's electricity. not everybody is hooked up to the matrix, hence lawrence fishburn's team. they are constantly hacking into the matrix to try to find people that would possibly have to potential to help fight the war against these robots who have enslaved the human race.
then comes keanu reeves' character, neo. they find him and have reason to believe that he is a prophecized(i know that spelled wrong) hero who has the ability to change the program of the matrix at will, and eventually save the human race.
that basically the rough summary of the movie. i honestly dont have to time to explain every part of the movie.
although i thought the special effects of the movie were great, that is not what i like most about it. i think that the concept of the matrix is truely unique, and well thought out. the whole idea of alternate realitys is interesting to me and i thought that they had a good theory.
not that i believe we're all hooked up to a machine, but it made a great story.
as far as video games being a bad basis for a movie, i completely agree. i dont think there has ever been a video game movie, ever, that has been even half way decent. i think hollywood thinks that it can throw some computer generated graphics and a well know name, like resident evil or tomb raider, and everybody will pay to see it. unfortunatly thats usually true.
but as far as the matrix goes i thought it was good.
look, maybe you not a sci-fi fan, or maybe your were just in a bad mood when you saw it.
i think you should watch it again, and maybe youll see it in a different light. |

You've given a reasonable synopsis of the movie. actually, I rather like Sci Fi movies, but I didn't like "the Matrix". I was expecting far more out of the movie, as so many friends of mine kept going on about how "cool" it was. For me it was a giant let-down though. Perhaps it's because I don't like movies based around conspiracy theories. The X-file episodes I like least are the ones dealing with the "US government cover-up of UFOs and extra-terrestrial life theme". I kind of liked JFK, but afterward found out that the character played by Donald Sutherland was a "composite". Whaa . . ? I thought this was an actual individual in history. Thus, I had difficulty buying into the idea of a conspiracy as represented in "the Matrix". I truly wanted to like the film. The idea of alternative realities is quite intriguing. I suppose therefore that I have to fall back on my previous argument that a large part of the failure of the movie was in the casting of Keanu "Bill 'n Ted" Reeves as the lead character. I rented "Chain Reaction" and felt let down because of his 'wooden' acting. His range as an actor is very limited. He can be somewhat effective as a "goofy" character, like in "Bill 'n Ted" or "I Love You to Death", but he has a hard time being the lead in any movie he appears in
(i.e. "Little Buddha"). The only time I felt he was somewhat "able" as a lead was in "Speed". otherwise, he makes a disaster out of every movie he's in. I was trying to figure out why he's been working so much, and came to the conclusion that it has nothing to do with his acting ability per se, but because the chicks like him. He's "cute" or something with his exotic Hawaiian-Lebanese looks. It may be that I was in a "bad mood" when I saw this movie, but I'm very hesitant to spend money on it again. Any movie with Mr. Reeves in it is very hit-and-miss for me. A much better "concept" Sci-fi movie is "Blade Runner"
with Harrison Ford. I think he's a far better actor than Keanu Reeves too. Maybe, it's just that the world of "Blade Runner" is far more believable. Anyway, you'll be happy to know that a sequel to "the Matrix" is apparently coming out in 2003.
