You really need to find something better to do with your time than insult people who like certain movies. For real. Get a hobby or something. You're a real winner....
P.S. People aren't geeks because they watch certain movies, they are geeks when they talk on stupid message boards to themselves and obsess over totally stupid shit.
here buddy, here are the downsides
they are long
they are boring
they are fantasy
they have munchkins with big floppy ears trying to take over the world
an old guy with a stick is a hero
these movies downright SUCK

also, to that prick who got mad because i liked willy wonka, if i ever find you, you will be severly beaten!!
I've only seen the first LOTR and was busy trying to get the guy sitting next to me to get his head off my shoulder as he was snoring in my ear... This was somewhat amusing and I turned to share it with my friend sitting on the other side of me...Who Was Also Asleep.
I propose that the reason alot of people [not all, but alot] think this movie is so great is that they really slept thru it and experienced a fantasy made up by their own subsconscious, set on by the opening credits and stale popcorn.
And Ethan, if you were in the same town, I would buy you a beverage.
Ok no offence but most american films are just bang bang someone dies and grenade blowz up...
Lotr has an actual strong impressive storyline and is completely original (unlike harry potter)
I'm a little confused, how is Harry Potter any more or less original then LOTR? I would imagine you realize both are from books? Although the HP books are not entirely unique, neither are the LOTRs books. Another thing, I'm not sure you know.. the harry potter films, are pretty much entirely acted by UK/Irish actors. And being filmed almost entirely in the UK area. The only thing "american" about it is the first two had an american director. The third being a Mexican director, and the newest one having a UK director.
Both, in my opinion are worthy movies, with even better books then their film adaptations. But, reading... how many people can actually do that?
I'm halfway thru watching 'Wolf Creek' and decided to take a break (note: if you see this movie, you don't have to watch the first 50 minutes - BOR-ING)
Now then, as far as the LOTR vs Harry Potter thing. It's like a pick-up football game against two Frat houses - who cares?
Indeed, the LOTR trilogy is not that unique - it's basically a just a mishmash of Nordic and Celtic Mythology. Don't misunderstand, very well written - just not all that original. What I do like about the books and the movies of LOTR is the lack of allegory. That is, something doesn't 'mean' something else. And that's actually a lot harder to write than you think.
Tolkien's collegue CS Lewis went down that road. Luckily I read the 'Chronicles of Narnia' before I knew anything of symbolism and methaphors, and what have you.
Now, I am too old and too male to even entertain the notion of reading a Harry Potter book - all I can surmise is that the broad that writes that tripe is too verbose. And its a shame that these new Narnia movies have come in the wake of the Harry Potter movies, because ultimately I don't think they will be as well received (even though Lewis' books have been around longer and are probably better).
I'm am just patiently waiting for the first of the child actors of the Harry Potter flicks to wind up on Crystal Meth lab or something.
Well, I guess I'm just young enough to be able to appreciate them both. I must admit before I ever started reading Harry Potter I gave it soo much crap. Then my wife (girlfriend at the time) finally convinced me to read one. After the first one I have to say, it was interesting, but I wasn't Hooked. But I decided to give them all an honest shout. You realize that with each book Rowling "ages" the plot. You start off with a "child's book" and end up with a book very rich in plot. As far as Rowlings just being some broad, with no talent, From as far as can tell, from as many sites as I can find, "the chronicles" have sold roughly 100 million copies, LOTR with 100 million, and the harry potter series with over 300 million copies sold.
Now, I'm not trying to compair Their talent level by any means. Lewis is and will always be one of my favorite authors. Although, oddly enough, I started re-reading the Chronicles about a month ago. Having finished the first two books, I'm starting to get the feeling that reading these books are a lot like watching your favorite childhood movies over again. Labrynth is always my example. I remember that movie being so great, then I watch it and it's "OK".
As far as the movie, I'm sorry, but judging from the trailers of the newest harry potter movie vs. the lion the witch and the wardrobe, I'd have to choose the harry potter movie. It seems to me like the DISNEY team that's doing narnia is trying to hard to make a LOTR-esk movie, and I just have a feeling it's going to fall short of that benchmark, and the benchmark of the books.
Oh, and Marc... you should really try not to be so critical about something you haven't read/seen. You know what happens when you ASSume.
