Dodgeball. I want to see it but I would rather wait for your review first.

nope

See the Terminal. It might not be great, but Dodgeball is bound to be a tremendous letdown. I love the Stiller and the Vaughn and all, but it just looks like crap. At least Spielberg makes quality, even if they can be a bit much sometimes (AI).

Oh, and you'll get to make fun of Tom Hanks' goofy accent the whole time. It ought to be unintentionally hilarious...

Why not?

June 18 2004, 12:06 PM

Why not just go see Potter? At least its not two hours long. Although if i had to pick between Dodgeball and Terminal, I'd pick Terminal - hands down.

Actually, Potter is two hours...

Though I agree, you should see that maybe instead of the other two.

I went to a premier (radio station promo event) for Dodgeball last night and it was hilarious. The reaction was very, very positive from pretty much everyone. There was even cheering half way in. It's very funny. Packed with hilarious cameos.

I heard Roger Ebert say that the studio blessed us by not giving away all the jokes in the trailer, and he is right. The trailer hides all the best bits.

And make sure you stay till after the credits. Trust me.

I agree. I'll review Terminal right now without even seeing it:

Castaway in an airport, except even more boring.

I vote Dodgeball.

Tom Hanks' accents

June 18 2004, 7:50 PM

Tom Hanks is running out of accents to use for his movie characters. I think Australian and Asian are still available, though. Hey Tom, why dont you have Spielberg write up a script for ya' so you can show all of us, yet again, just how good of an actor you really are.

I thought The Terminal would be an obvious skip for Todd, I was kind of suprised to see him even consider it.

Here is how The Terminal will play out.

Hanks gets stuck in airport.
Fill the next 40-50 minutes with tired airport jokes and Hanks slipping on wet floors because he can't read the "wet floor" signs.
Meets Zeta.
Falls in love with Zeta.
In a pathetic attempt to show that nice guys really don't always finish last, Zeta tells off a bunch of male pigs.
Hanks and Zeta make it out of the airport misadventures and live happily ever after.

Please mail me 8 dollars and a short thank you note.

Jeez Todd, why'd you even ask? Dodgeball won the majority and you still flock to The Terminal. You asked for it.

I saw Dodgeball yesterday. I thought it was very, very funny. Lots of great cameos, lots of action, and Jason Bateman is hilarious as the color commentator on ESPN.

Stiller always makes the same kind of movies, like Spielberg some would argue, but Stiller brings no quality in his movies. His director is usually some moron who usually directs videos, commercials or sitcoms, there's no scenario, the actors suck and the jokes are pretty much the same in every movie.

I'll add a couple of things now that I read the Terminal review

1 - Spielberg isn't new to the whole product placement thing, remember minority report the 2 hours long infomercial

2 - Terminal is a remake of a french movie so what I'm guessing is Spielberg liked the movie and that's why he did it, he just failed (miserably according to Todd)the adaptation.

"1 - Spielberg isn't new to the whole product placement thing, remember minority report the 2 hours long infomercial"

But it had (IMO) a good movie to go around it. Todd was simply saying that this movie was concocted as a lame attempt to sell advertisments. I thought it was a great flick, based on a Philip K Dick story if I remember right.

I refuse to see this movie and not just because I hate the number one enemy of my generation Tom Hanks but because this story is stolen from a man that has actually been living this nightmare for over a decade and I'm certain that he did not see a penny. I forget this guys name but I'm certain that if you did a google search like "living in an airport" or something it should come up. GQ did an article on him last year. I think he lives in a terminal at heatrhow or something due to a really bizzarre diplomatic fluke. If they were gonna make a movie about this why not make it real and try to help the poor bastard?

forgot his name too, but the NY Times just did a story about him this weekend I think.

I'm glad Terminal tanked in the BO this weekend. Maybe next time, spielberg will get himself a new actor. Maybe Hanks will stop trying to pull off crazy accents. Maybe Zeta Jones will stop being so high on herself....

Terminal

June 21 2004, 10:10 AM

"While this film allegedly is not based on a real-life story in any way, there is a man who has spent an extended amount of time in an airport. Since 1988, Iranian expatriate Merhan Karimi Nessari has resided in Terminal 1 of Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport."

Dodgeball

June 26 2004, 1:12 AM

If there were an Oscar just for "Best Comedy", Dodgeball should win it. The movie is just outright hilarious. Also, I don't know what people are chirping about with Bateman, Rip Torn is EASILY the funniest guy in the movie. The man is just freakin' awesome. Go see it Todd, bring something that won't spill though, because you will laugh hard enough to spill it.

Go see The Terminal anyway

June 21 2004, 10:22 AM

I saw The Terminal this weekend and loved it. In several places, I was laughing so hard that I was in tears. The product placement was just part of the airport setting. I also thought it was a sort of commentary about how this guy couldn't really enter the United States, but he had a whole microcosm of capitalism laid out before him at JFK -- and no mon-ay to partake of it.

I respect Todd's opinion, but I really thought The Terminal was good. My local paper (Dallas Morning News) gave it an A- and I'd agree with that.

But I'm also itching to see Dodgeball, too.

its a lose lose situation

June 21 2004, 10:57 AM

I saw dodgeball yesterday and read Todds review of The Terminal today. Terminal sounded horrible, Dodgeball wasnt much better but sounds like it kicks the crap out of Terminal. Unfortunatley Dodgeball was one of those movies where you they show you the best parts on the previews and then when you get to those funny parts you dont laugh cause you have already seen them. I was waiting for dodgeball to get funny, but it never did. It wasnt a complete flop but I was expecting more for some reason. Definatley a rental in my opinion.

I think it would be easier to find dinosaur bones in my backyard than to find a good flick at the theatres these days. Although the last movie I saw was Troy and it kicked ass, but come on wheres the funny nowadays??? Farley brothers, Cohen brothers, can we get some help please?

Both have potential

June 21 2004, 2:17 PM

I wanted to see both because, despite everybody else, I still like Tom Hanks and come on, Steven Freakin Spielberg, the man can direct a movie when he wants to. Dodgeball however was a different story, I wasn't to sold on the idea when I first heard of it but Rip Torn is great added to Vaughn and Stiller and Dodgeball the most ridiculous game ever can't not be funny. I was kinda hoping they would go a different route with the movie though, I was hoping they would create a professional dodgeball league in which these rag tag people (Vaughn's team) challenge the Defending Champions (stiller's team) for the title of Dodgeball champion of the world. You know just as cliched and has the ablility for lots of humor, but again their route is most likely funny also. I guess I'll just have to see them and see.
