I saw this movie, Napoleon Dynamite, yesterday...it's in limited release right now, so maybe a lot of people can't see it. I thought it was one of the funniest movies I've seen all year. Any other thoughts? I read some reviews elsewhere and am stunned that some people hated it.

i though it was hilarious... probably about one of the top five funniest movies ive seen. it really depends on your sense of humor though... theres about 4 guarentee big laughs, not matter who you are, but the rest is based on your sense of humor. basically, if you think one thing is funny, you'll think the whole thing is funny.

My god, unbelievable that I actually found people who liked this movie. To my opinion, the only good parts were those where napoleon got beaten. but it's a matter of taste i guess

Limited funny parts?

Napolean getting beaten was funny? Maybe when he was beaten up by a flying piece of steak (that's what I'm talkin' about), but I really don't think that bullies are funny. Until they get stared down by some really bad ass looking latinos and made to feel small like the pissants they are. It was funny to watch Kip get smacked around a lot though.

don't tell me you didn't laugh at the special machine with the... uhm... crystals or when Lyle was taking care of the steak shortage. That's classic stuff!

Oh, I should probably mention that the house I grew up had a very similar kitchen. Dark brown cabinets, cheap (formica?) counter tops, yellow sink and appliances. I showed my 65-year old dad the Dynamite kitchen and his only response was "oh, well, I guess I should sue them" (he was joking)

So where was I? Oh, you didn't like the movie. Well, well.... uhh.... YOUR MOM GOES TO COLLEGE! **runs off quickly with arms extended downward**

I personally did not think this movie was too funny to the naked eye, until 4 days afterward when I was still quoting parts of it. "I had to make room for my nunchuks." Anyways the movie was funny and is gonna be a cult classic for this reason, everyone who has grown up in America can relate in someway, somehow to this movie. Whether its the kitchen, the internet dating scenario, the offbeat uncle who thinks he is "all that", or the crazy grandma. Don't deny it you know you women out there over the age of 25 have had a glamour shot or have thought about it. And if you didn't just know Napolean did something that we all would never do....play tetherball in public. Just remember if you people hate on me.....once a gang wanted me because I was good with a bowstaff!

What am i not seeing?

September 14 2005, 11:01 PM

You know i tried to watch this movie, i really tried. I heard how it was so funny and my parents rented it, so i gave it a view and i just did not like it at all. I like alot of comedies both physical humour, sarcastic and dry comedies but Napolean Dynamite just did nothing for me at all. The characters were annoying especially Napolean, everything he did was grating from his stupid constant expression to his actions, ugh i couldn't stand him and he was the lead character! I'm not looking for a meaningful moral movie, far from that, since i tend to get sick of all those movies with deep, moving morals. However when i see a movie i usually look for character or a story, some kind of hint of a plot but this movie has none of that. It is just a boring bunch of series of shots of bland, uninteresting characters doing dull things. I'm still puzzled as to the huge cult following this film is gathering, what am i missing in this film? I really tried to enjoy as i said before but it still comes across as pointless and bland. I'm off to see some actuallly funny, entertaining comedy films with interesting characters and a plot.

You aren't missing anything...some people can connect with this movie, I personally can't on some levels. Parts are hilarious and most of it is just plain stupid. To me it's the connectivity of it that grabs me. You have to find the part that speaks on your level sometime in your life, and if you can't then its just not your movie. Take it for what it is...kinda like the "Time Warp" from Rocky Horror, dig the song but not the cross-dressing alien afterward.(WE KNOW IT WAS YOU TIM CURRY AND THERE IS NO ERASING IT FROM YOUR PERMANENT RECORD)
