Bad combos

Sometimes you see a movie with two actors together & you think . . . how could they do this to the movie going public? Who could possibly have thought these two actors would work well together? For example:

or perhaps almost as bad . . .

No chemistry (though that may have been the point based on reading the description on the poster). Who the hell thought this could possibly work? Now, I haven't seen this, though I read some reviews that claimed it was pretty awful. . . so perhaps it isn't for me to judge, but . . .

What bad combo have you seen in a movie? What pair of actors so lacked chemistry that the movie was a complete mess? After viewing it, what movie left you wondering, "Who the hell could've thought these two would work well together?"

Combo Platter

Well, first off - I am one the very very few that liked 'Wild Wild West' (but I lost credibility recently - see previous post on 'Saw'). Other than that, I concur bad combos are like drinking milk served with red meat - not kosher. I am sure there are plenty more obvious ones out there, but off the top of my head...

Lacking Chemistry Category:

Neo/Trinity - Matrix Trilogy
Cruise/Kidman - pick any three
Halle Berry/Ben Bratt - Catwoman

Combo-icky

One combo that actually made me feel a little uncomfortable was Jodie Foster and Matthew McCaughnaheyyyyy in the movie Contact. I know it's called acting, but I just couldn't stop thinking..."But come on, she's a lesbian! And him...he bangs bongos naked with other guys!" (the last is not a euphemism). Just an unfortunate pairing.

Oh, and one is a very good actor and the other is not much more than a smile and an accent. In my most humble of opinions.

Amigos was wicked!!! I think you're thinking of Selleck, Guttenberg and Danson in Three men and a baby.

Didn't Rocky also do a movie with Estelle Getty? Bad idea.

And watching Dennis Hopper, who at the time was SIXTY, have sex with Amy Locane, who at the time was TWENTY FIVE, in "Carried Away" was disturbing. Almost as disturbing as the whole movie.

Re: Rocky, Estell Getty, and 3 amigos

Rocky and Estell Getty did do a movie together. I haven't seen it, but to quote another poster here, "I don't think I have to".

As for Three Amigos: I thought it was OK, but far from outstanding. To begin with, I'm not a huge Chevy Chase fan. I like Martin and at times Short, however I find that often when two or more comics work together a film tends to fall apart one way or another. Steve Martin worked well with John Candy in Planes Trains and Automobiles because I think it was more a case of Martin playing the straight guy & reacting to Candy rather than trying to be zany himself. In the case of Three Amigos (it's been a while since I saw it mind you), but as I remember it it seemed like the three of them were not really that comfortable being together on screen in the same movie. I mean, if they have their own movie they can do their own schtick (sometimes to disastorous effects BTW), but it seemed like one or the other of the actors was either taking a back seat, or just kind of looking on while one of the others took up the slack.

I do recall one actually funny bit in it though where the three of them are on burros or donkeys or something and they're riding through a searing hot desert when Chase takes out a water canteen, swills the water, gargles and ends up spitting it out on the ground while the other two look on.

Or, maybe it was the premise of the whole thing. I dunno. Just wasn't a movie that particularly did much for me.
