Went and saw this flick this weekend, at the drive in!!! My kids get a big kick out of going to drive in, so it's always fun... But I actually kind of liked the movie, I think that Todd was going into it with the mindset of it being a total remake of Willy Wonka, but it wasn't. It was pretty darn true to the actual book Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. The older movie was an adaptation of the book. I know this is no China Syndrome or anything, but I still enjoyed it, I think Todd's review was a bit on the harsh side, however if you are expecting to see Johnny Depp try and upstage Gene Wilder's performance then you will be disappointed, because they are two totally different charcters. I am normally not too much of Tim Burton fan, I always feel like the guy was locked in a closet a lot as a kid when I watch his movies, his obsession with death and darkness to me just isn't that much fun. ONLY MY OPINION!!!!
The last few review's have seemed like Todd's had a chip on his shoulder when coming into the theatre, but honestly who can blame him? I dont know how much going to the theatre costs you all, but over here I've watched movie tickets almost triple in price in less than five years. When I am
paying almost 30 bucks before you walk in the building for 2 tickets, I want to see something worthwhile. Movie studios have been pushing out a lot of garbage. It seems the last few years, remakes, tv shows getting movies, more remakes, unneeded sequels, cheezy rip-offs of Japanese movie Directors/Producers, or CG'ing up a childhood cartoon with the alterior motives of making more money off all the merchandise.
I'm not saying everything that comes out these days is crap, but the good movies are very few and far between. Even if it is a "great" movie in my mind, it seems more prudent to me to wait 6 months (or less if it was a bomb) for it to come out on DVD. Of course the are being spineless and releasing as many possible "special editions" and "directors limited edition" and "Holy shit if you dont get this edition the world will end! edition"
God money rules all, and Jon Stewart has more credibility than CNN.
Sorry for ranting, I don't read these forums too often, and if any of this has been already discussed, my bad. Good luck to all of you.
ok like seriously guys, i went into the theatre thinking "oh damn, here we go, another gay remake" but i LIKED IT...it had so many double-meaning things like "try my grass" and Depp's character was like a micheal jackson...truely scary...the only major complaint is the oompa loompas. like seriously, keep the cool face paints and orange and green, dont change that and dont change the songs. but other than that, great movie.

Tim Burton didn't change the Oompa Loompa's face paint or song lyrics, Mel Stuart did with the original movie adaptation of the book.
They are not supposed to be orange, they are supposed to be dark brown like chocolate. Their lyrics were pulled right from the book.
I do not want this to simply be a "this movie was bad cause it sucks" messages.
Here are my concerns.
1. I was ok with the wonka backstory untill the end. I did not like how charlie first denied ownership of the factory untill he helps reunite willy and wilbur. I thought this was cheesy and felt tacked on.
2. There was not enough in the beggining of the movie to really drum up several important things.
A. We didnt get the sense of just how superior Wonka bars are than everyone elses. When wonka describes the waterfall he sounds like an egotistical buffoon rather than a genious explaining the secrets of his success. True grandpa Joe explains how in demand wonkas chocolate is, but the first movie really gave a better sense of this.
B. We dont get a sense of how important the chocolate factory is to charlie and in fac he offers to give up the prize and the trip twice. Maybe thats in the book, I dont remember, but I didnt like it.
3. The movie was not nearly Dark as I would have liked. wonka was not scary, the chocolate factory was not scary, the things thta happened to the kids were not scary. We learned that veruca would be ok waaaay to fast.
4. I didnt like wonka being depicated as infantile and immature. Wonka in his own factory should be like a G-d in the garden of eden. completly in control and relaxed.
This said, I recognize not everyone will think any of these were flaws at all or not to the extent that I did, but I didnt like them and they ruined the movie for me. Ther were some things I liked, but they were not done much better than the first movie did anyway.
Why do people do that? Why do they write G-d rather then spell the word "God" out? And even in this context, you're not referring to your God. (or maybe you are, I don't know) So why the concern?
Visually I did like the aspects of the movie. I liked the way the children looked almost mannequin-like in their own cliches. I thought that Charlie Bucket and Veruca Salt were extremly good. However, Johnny failed miserably. I was distracted throughout the movie by his makeup and wig. I was like "Hey thats Johnny Depp with alot of makeup!" He did not do it for me as Willy Wonka. The whole think was forced. Like "Oh I am having a Flashback now-isn't it funny?" I didn't see the factory the way it could have been. They barely scraped the surface of the "tour". It was like bang..first child gone, now lets go to the next room...ok now shes gone too. The whole think was trying to wrap itself up to quick. We didn't get a chance to really DISLIKE the kids like we did in the original. The songs and dances of the oompa loompas were annoying. Johnny was equally annoying in watching them. Like the oompas were his side show act. I expected more from this movie and was left feeling like why did they do this?
ok so yeah, the movie was kinda on the short side
and i seriously do NOT care what the oompa loompas looked like in the book because in the original movie, i liked 'em betta
but still
this movie was good
it was funnay
and if you dont get the drug and sex double entrangres, you are either retarded or 7...
yeah
So if a bad movie has drug and sex double Entrangers we should all say it was good? No-I don't think so. Just because Willy said "try my grass" in one scene and they talk about chocolate making you feel as if you were in love did not make up for Johnny's annoying performance.
normally, i think johnny depp sucks, but holy shit dude he was GOOD in this
he scared me
that is a GOOD thing by the way
also, the drug and sex things were so much more than the "try my grass"
for example, the glass elevator shooting out of the cylandrical tube represents sperm shooting (or skeet)
so yeah
fuck ya 2
byee

Willy Wonka is another man's Charlie and the Choc.

Just saw this movie last weekend and I think it should be added to the list of 'movies you should see while stoned'... Who's keeping that list? What's the status?
Anyhoo, any phallic or drug symbolism aside, I thought it was very Burton-esque, which I expected. I didn't really care about the back story and I felt, in general that the kids were strong but didn't do enough. They were upstaged by their parents--who were upstaged by Johnny Depp, who was upstaged by the chocolate factory/special effects.
I also thought that although the producers were trying to have WW come across as immature or uncomfortable with children/people in general, some of WW's lines just didn't work, making him almost appear to be the bad guy. [And isn't that Slugworth's job?]
[SPOILERS HERE...RIGHT HERE ----> Like when WW turns to Mike Teevee and shoults 'MUMBLER!!' or when WW insists that Charlie [a child] come to the chocolate factory without his family. END OF SPOILERS...]
Some of the backstory and character choices were very contrary to the book. Now I know some of you will say 'So what? It was a movie, not that book'. That is true, however, this movie was taken from the book and if one doesn't like the story and it's ending, one should write one's own story. But maybe I'm expecting too much from Hollywood.
Ya know what they say: Those who refuse to change their expectations are doomed to be dissapointed.
The only problem i had with the movie was that there was only one oompa loompa and they just copy/pasted him all over the screen. Granted when he played a few of the different roles it was kinda funny but for the songs it was just annoying. I think depp did a great job. For a guy who hasn't talked to a single person (barring oompa loompas) in like 10 years he should be quite...eccentric. and how could you not laugh at the "burn and trauma ward....just added recently" joke. They changed the ending a little from the book (i just found a copy and it is indeed different) As for sexual jokes you cant do more than telling a girl "dont touch his nuts, he will go crazy" I agree todd seems to have had a chip on his shoulder a lot lately with movie reviews. I just saw skeleton key and as long as you dont try to figure it out early on (my friend knew who done it early on) then its a great surprise at the end. Especially when you realize
---->SPOILER FOR THE SKELETON KEY
That the parents lynched and burned thier own children to death while getting drunk and laughing at them and never knew the difference shudders to think of that
END OF SPOILER<-----
And the acting in that movie was great too. Genuinely creepy characters. Todd keeps going hella late at night and is probably tired and he aint having his wasabi or whatever like he normally does. maybe thats why
