The first part of this movie was so slow that I almost turned it off, but there was something about it that made me want to listen to every word spoken and watch every detail for possible clues to where this movie was taking me.
Everything about this movie was very subtle, you need to have all the lights off and no interruptions in order to truly get into this movie.
Carol White is a typical housewife who becomes allergic to her "enviornment" and while her friends, family and even Doctors keep dismissing her sickness as hypochondria she takes refuge in a New Age retreat center that is "chemical free". She seems to deteriorate throughout the movie, and keeps insisting to herself and her husband that she just needs more time to get better. There was one patient at the retreat that walks around outside and is never seen close up, that really made the hairs on my arm stand up. This and other parts of the movie truly frightened me in a way that I haven't felt watching a movie in a long time.
The end leaves alot of questions but I highly reccomend checking this one out.
Since I had absolutely no idea what film you were talking about, I sauntered over to Imdb.com, saw the trailer - and... as much of a positive review you give 'Safe', it just looks like a boring 'Outer Limits' episode. I dunno, the online trailer made it look pretty cheesy.
Ok! Heres more info on the film:
Directed by Todd Haynes
Starring Julianna Moore
Came out in 1995 (although movie took place in the 80's complete with cheesy music like Madonna's "Lucky Star")
The movie's charm is that it lulls you into a mundane life complete with aerobics classes, purchasing of ugly furniture and stupid dinners with husband's boss that when it starts slowly getting weird and creepy the mood is already set in a way that will leave you wanting more.
WARNING: This movie is VERY slow so be patient!
