Forgive the lack of a 3 line review. I kind of dug this flick for what it was. I've seen one episode of Firefly, thought it was okay. This movie is...a 2 hour episode of that. And because of that, it's a little overlong. It breaks down into well defined categories. Some of it was awesome. Some of it was average standard fare. Some of it sucked. But I really did kind of like the world. Earth is overpopulated, and they've discovered a new solar system. As the planets grow outward, there is less order, civilization, and is eventually run by rebels ("browncoats"). Not terribly original, but this space adventure is done without space adventure nerdom. There are no aliens, phaser guns, or typical Star Trek @#%$. I've heard it called a western in space, and that's about right. Six shooters and shotguns abound. A very cool, cold villan that I really dug, and one of the coolest final fights I've seen in some time, maybe since Goldeneye. I've heard this guy get a lot of praise for his writing and dialogue, and I'm pretty sure this is from people who base that claim entirely off what else is on the WB. There are a couple of good lines, and one made me LOL ("yes, i've read a poem, try not to faint"), but a lot of it was wooden and hokey, and while that may be the point here, I don't think he's half the writer he's cracked up to be. Overall, some cool violence, a decent story, a great lead character and a semi-okay supporting cast makes this one a 7/10 from D-Tomic.
Trust me, Mr. Whedon is a s**t writer. Alien Resurrection, his original X-Men script, and Buffy. BUFFY! Why did people love that crap? BUFFY! ANGEL!! CHARMED!!! They're like spin-offs of bewitched where Dracula truly is Count Chocula!?!!??! Why people just can't admit that they loved Buffy and Charmed for the chicks and not the crappy stories is beyond me. As for Serenity, thanks but no thanks. The lame exchange of "You wanna run this ship?...Yeah...Well, you can't." that was in the trailer turned me off.

its pretty much a space western except the captain is a pompous nasty piece of crap for a hero.
has a companion (hooker) on board and calls her a whore to her face but don't let anyone else run her down.
the tough guy , well lets face it , isn't. but whichever baldwin he is plays the part very well.
