Narnia and Christianity

C'mon everyone. Who is really that upset that this movie has some Christian meaning behind it? REALLY??

What a stupid friggin debate! I can't stand hearing about it anymore! What is the big controversy? There are TONS of movies out there that have had a similar take on the same themes. Where's the debate on those movies?

Besides that, this movie is very faithful to the book. The book was written for the purpose of giving an allegorical account of the message of Christianity. Deal with it! I'm Jewish, and I wasn't offended by the book as a kid. I'm sure I'll not be offended by the movie.

If Christianity (or any other religion for that matter) is controversial, then we're all in trouble.

I personally don't have a problem with it either, ONLY AS LONG as it not forced down my throat. Those 'Omega Code' and 'Left Behind' flicks I will pass on (as I feel guilty for basically EVERYTHING afterwards).

As much as we bitch and complain, Christian plot devices can help a movie. I listed some in another thread, so I won't be redundant

It's not that I don't like movies that have Christian themes. It's that I don't much like Christians. (as a general rule).

I'm not Christian -at all. I'm more 'pagan', than anything...anyways..one of the reasons I love Narnia (books and the movie...the movie, wow!) is because of the Christian allegories! It's so well done! It's beautiful! claps hands

One post on the movie board in the last year, and I'm called an idiot. To say that as a General Rule I don't like Christians does not make me retarded. It makes me a person who doesn't like Christians (as a general rule). Sure, I like a few (my mom is a Christian, and I like her more or less). But for the most part, I find so many Christians to be tiresome and completely irrational. They might as well be Jon Frum worshippers.

No, no, no. I knew where you were coming from, Dude. For example, I was in Texas a few years ago, and because of that trip, I hate everything about Texas, the people, the culture, the food, EVERY-THING. Am I generalizing? You bet your ass I am.

Does my boy 8 Bucks hate all Christians? No, of course not. But - if in some alternate reality all Chrsitians lived in Texas, I could understand why he would.

It's becoming far too easy to step on toes on this Board as of late. C'mon folks, dont' summarily impugn at will. Wait a couple days, then respond. I mean, I don't get heat anymore when I badmouth Finland anymore, right?

it DOES make you a retard! It is just far too diverse to make a statement like that. You could say texans or southerners or even possibly canadians or maybe jews or italians or blacks. All of which would be stupid and wrong generalizations but still much less than christians. Your talking about, what, a third of the world!?! (by the way I see the irony in a christan calling someone a retard but I'm just having fun too!

A couple of things:

1. Got a name other than Anonymous?

2. Yeah, big time irony.  Christ who according to the Bible forgave his persecutors probably wouldn't like you calling 8 Bucks a "fucktard".  Because despite the euphemism, that's what you called him.

3. He did say "generally" & later qualified it by saying that his mother is a Christian, and that he doesn't hate his mother.

A lot of Christians are annoying assholes who push their faith on others by basically threatening anyone who disagrees with them with eternal damnation. "I believe in Christ and you don't . . . . so you are going to Hell forever, and I'm not.  hahahaha."  I think this is the reason that a lot of us non-Christians aren't too terribly fond of many Christians.  There's also the fact that a lot of Christians would have us all believe that the world is no older than 8,000 years old which runs contrary to common sense based on hundreds of years of accumulated scientific data and observations of the natural world around us.  Personally I think people who believe things like that are naive, and quite honestly lacking in education . . . . . Sounds an awful like a definition of idiot Anon.

i don't like you because a lot of people like you are murdering pedophile rapists. Who? non-christians, that's who.

Do so called "christians" ever do that stuff? Well, we're not talking about that.

What qualifies as "a lot"? Well more than one of those kinds of people is too many, so whatever I say really.

Therefore my opening sentence is accurate and appropriate. Ya see where I'm going with this?? Now remove your head from your bum!

and "fucktard" is a dumb word. Retard is better. Fucktard is being really nasty whereas retard is something my girlfriend might call me in a playful way. Not that 8 bucks is my girlfriend...

Anyway, I was just saying that it was a bad generalization.

Actually, I take offense to the word retard.
My Aunt's son is severly retarded, and when anyone uses that word playfully, I always do a double take.
So for the Christian who wants to belittle everyone, I will pray for you. To MY God.

Anon, Anon, Anon, First off You gotta get a name so we can identify you in the future... If I were to say I hate Racists or murderers or stupid people or any kind of characteristic that can pertain to several different individuals rather then one in specific would you consider that "Retarded" also? Man I really don't like nazis... o but wait, I'm sure there was at least one that was a pretty decent guy just a little mixed up. Man I really hate rapists... nope can't do that there were a couple that used to put change in santa's pot whenever he was out there ringing his bell. You are attacking someone for speaking in generalities and absolutes then do the same thing. Basically my point is if he wants to say he "Generally" doesn't like people who identify themselves as christians, (which I tend to agree with) it's not much different then saying I generally don't like Nazis, rapists and murderers. If he had said he hates all of a certain group of people I could see where your point might make sense if you weren't contradicting yourself while you made it. But he didn't so stop being such a wet blanket.

I'm glad you took the time to write that, turk, but I think it's fairly weak. My argument is as follows:

C'MON!!! You generally dislike christians?? I just think that's so blanket-statementing (word?). You coulda said those preachy type christians or those scumbag hypocrite ones or Dubya! I would agree on all counts if you said that. But you don't generally like christians? There's probably lots who you like but don't come out and throw it in your face that they are christians. In fact that's probably part of what you like about them (not to put words in your mouth). C'mon dude, seriously.

By the way, I wouldn't be trying to take the piss out of you so bad if everyone wasn't trying to defend it so much. What a bunch of titmice! (Thanks Marc!)

It's not titmouses? Really? Hmmm.

And just for the record, I know not all people from Texas are morons, but trust me, if you had the lost weekend that I did, you'd be a little biased too.

Poor anon,
You can try to take the piss out of me all you want, and it doesn't even scratch the surface. I wonder if you'd feel better if I also noted that I generally don't like Muslims either? I find I'm far more tolerant of Jews and most practioners of Eastern Religions.

Anyway, I've heard enough of this Narnia movie to scratch it off my list.

Re: Narnia and Christianity

Thats it you've turned me against you know 8 bucks.... ALL Muslims are children of the one true god allah.... ok ok I thought about keeping that up but I just couldn't... I don't find myself more tolerable of any organized religions that are as established and based of materials like the big three western ones. I think my grandmother has the right idea about religion. She goes into the woods every morning with her dog and sits on this fallen tree and prays or thinks or whatever. That to me is the best religion around.
