Great cult sci-fi action flick based on a Stephen King novel about a futuristic game show where players are broadcasted live in a large labyrinth where they have to reach the goal and get hunt down by thugs. Arnold Schwartzenger plays an accused cop who is on the lamb is caught as he now a contestant on "The Running Man", he joins with his friends including a new love interest to fight against the system and expose the truth of the show.
Entertaining, goofy, action packed no-brainer that is very interesting and has some satire on the media to it about the effects of reality and television. It's "The Fifth Element", "Videodrome", "Battle Royale", " Total Recall" and " Commando" all rolled into one, recommended.
It's not that I don't disagree with ya, buddy. I like 'The Running Man' as well (did you know that Starsky, from the original 'Starsky and Hutch' directed it?).
Anyway, it's just, well - the movie came out literally 20 years ago, and since it's not a cult film, it's on TV/cable ALL THE TIME. Now, if you directed readers to see 'Videodrome' for example, that would be something - as virtually no one has seen that little piece of genius.
Ive seen Videodrome several times and most film buffs I know have seen it at one point. Its not as secluded or cultish as you may think. And its certaing not a "little piece of genius" IMHO.
More people have probly seen videodrome than they have Dead Ringers or Naked Lunch for that matter(despite the acclaim of the book).
Or how about my favorite sex zombie flick ever: Shivers.
Whoa. 'Dead Ringers' not a cult movie? It has a woman with more than one vagina! That HAS to be a benchmark in some form of cult category. But to be fair, I've never seen 'Shivers'.
Seen videodrome and naked lunch... haven't seen the other two mentioned (not running man the other two... shivers and *forgot the name*) I liked naked lunch better, it just seemed to do more with less. But I have seen Naked lunch more times and more recently so maybe I need a videodrome refresher.
About Running man, do you guys know there was a french movie with the exact same premises made a few years earlier? Only it wasn't a wrongfully accused cop conspiracy thing but an unemployed man doing this for the money. It's called "Le prix du danger" (the price of danger in english don't know the actual english title) anybody seen it?
If you are talking about the general premise of hunting people that has been done about two million times... all the way back to The Most Dangerous Game, a book then a movie. There are a bunch of B movies about the same concept and then we also have The Pest a comedy remake... Running man is my favorite movie generally based on this concept though.
