I have good taste in music (Nick Drake; Cowboy Junkies; The Police; 'Heart'; old U2, etc) and I have bad taste in music (Celine Dion; Rush; Boston; and so forth). Now this topic was brought up on the other board, but I've been exiled for awhile for too many long and drawn out personal anecdotes (and rightly condemned, might I add).
Anyway, someone brought up what were some really decent movie soundtracks. And aside from rap/sampling tunes, a lot of original stuff just doesn't make the scene any longer. So I thought long and hard, looked at my own music library, and only came up with a few:
'Saturday Night Fever' - Disco fan or not, it's hard not to like.
'The Lost Boys' - It's 80s to be sure, but dare I say that 'Echo and Bunnymen's' version of People Are Strange is better than the 'Doors'.
Most OSTs from Cameron Crowe films - 'Singles'? C'mon! It's near classic!
Which brings me to this. 'Elizabethtown'. It's not a great movie, but Crowe put out TWO soundtracks. The first, with mainly semi-famous and/or B-side material from the 70s isn't bad, but it's the second sountrack witch is amazing. It's only the musical score (penned by his wife, Nancy Wilson - formally of 'Heart'), but it's truly enchanting. Listen to a few clips from it on amazon.com or bn.com, it's surprisingly good stuff.
