Miami Vice

Walked out last night about an hour and 20 minutes in. I wasn't alone, probably 20 others before me.

I can't believe Michael Mann let me down this bad, after Heat, Insider, Collateral, LotM. It's much worse than you think it is. When it begins, you are immediately lost. There are no opening credits, and if I didn't see the Universal logo, id be sure they started the movie in the middle. How do you make a fucking Miami Vice movie confusing, and so BORING?

I sat through about an hour and 20 minutes, and there is one action sequence that lasts literally less than 2 minutes. And that may be okay, but not in the world of Miami Vice, I'm not here for it's brilliant narrative, I'm here for sex, guns, and explosions. I want two hours of that slick shootout near the end of Heat. It's so fucking boring, and everyone in this movie looks pissed off and bored that they are in this movie. Colin Farrell is so bad in this its funny.

I remember "walking out" of the TV series pilot around 20 minutes in. I wouldn't expect the movie to be any better considering its basis.

Couldn't agree more. I knew the reviews were mediocre, but I figured how bad could it be for a matinee on a 93 degree day? It was tedious and humorless. Were Crocket and Tubbs supposed to like each other? I couldn't tell, but I certainly didn't care what happened to them.

Why any director would make a movie that hinged on the performance of Colin Ferrell is preposterous. Then, on top of that, the asian woman who was his "love interest" reminded me of some kind of automatronic, emotionless robot. Combined with C.F.'s non-acting ability made me want to blow my brains out after Act 2. The action sequences that eventually came in at the end were OK, but the reasoning behind shooting some of the shots with that shitty looking video confounds me. If I wanted to see overly exaggerated shakiness and noise, I would tune into Fox for a re-run of Cops.

yeah...but what about the sexual tension?

Ok, so I knew this guy a long time ago who was doing his master's thesis on 'buddy' movies, specifically the movies where one of the partners is white and the other is black.

It was his theory that ALL of these movies [and he had clips from all or most of them] had sexual tension between the two male characters and there were some not-so subtle undertones of romantic love between them. He sighted examples of romantic music swelling at the end of "Die Hard" when the cop and Bruce Willis finally meet, clips from "Lethal Weapon" where the words 'f*ck' and 'up the ass' were repeatedly used between Glover and Gibson, etc.

Keep in mind that this was waaaay before "Broke Back Mountain" [I think we can all agree there were no UNDERTONES in that one]. I also think in hindsight that perhaps this guy needed to come out of his own personal closet.

My point is [and I do have one] that watching the previews of Miami Vice had me remember this guy's thesis and I was wondering if anyone who saw the film [who stayed...or stayed awake] picked up on any of that?

Thanks...

And now back to your regularly scheduled forum:

So 'single white female'...what's up with that?

i sat through this big screen TV show. which is more than i can say about the TV show.
as far as sexual tensions betwix the cops??? OHGAWD!
i guess i was too occupied with my own sextension to notice-
i couldn't stop thinking about putting my foot up that>every derogatory term<dudes assSTFU!
but if you all say that 'the cops were gay and the robbers were boring' i'm not gonna argue cause-
i'm not really into this genre.

Miami Vice isn't Miami Vice without Don Johnson. Colin Ferrel is no substitute.

But doesn't Colin have nicer hair than Don Johnson?
