Ok today OT posted the music video for 'St. Elmo's Fire'.
I don’t know what bugs me more:
That the lips aren’t synched with the lyrics
The hair
The number of ‘layers’ or overlay happening here
Dimi Moore’s hair
John Parr’s hair
That I once thought this movie was so deep.
Rob Lowe's hair...and the whole pretty boy rebel thing he had going on.
I remember when that movie came out. I was a sophomore in a private summer school and the small gaggle of totally hot chicks loved it and I think thought that our summer school was sorta like being post-college or something. I pretended to like it too, just so we could converse. Awful, awful movie that did not age well at all... Kinda like Kathleen Turner.
Wow, I just actually watched that video after my original post. So much random sadism and hatred boiled up in me. I mean, I want to see Rob Zombie make a third installment of his Corpse/Reject series where the family just slaughters all of these characters (and in some cases, the actual actors playing them.)
Looking at the cast, the only one that I respect 20 years later is Rob Lowe who just recently cracked me up in 'Thank You For Smoking' - which, by the way, Todd, I have to disagree with your review of. Yeah, smoking-schmoking, so ten years ago, but the movie wasn't really about smoking, but about bullshit and bullshitting, a topic on which the movie hits about every target it sets up for itself. (However, just for the record, I usually agree with your reviews)
Singer John Parr, who co-wrote and sung the title song "St. Elmo's Fire" for the soundtrack, explained during a speech at the Childrens choice awards in Sheffield that he was "not particularly thrilled" to be working on the film and that, motivation for the song actually came from a young man who had recently become paralyzed. He said that "the wheels" of the Man in Motion referenced in the lyrics was popularly thought to mean the wheels of Demi Moore's jeep, but actually refers instead to those of a wheelchair.
From the IMDB
Well I guess, despite his hair, John Parr isn't nearly the shallow bastard the rest of the people in that video seem to be.
Okay, I need to get off this message board now before someone disembowels me for my unnatural loving hate of all things St. Elmo's Fire.
I'm not saying John Parr is a shallow bastard. But his hairdress is...or was.
You could rent "St. Elmo's Fire" if you are on some holiday firey rant. But I say, keep it thematical and rent "The Ref" too. Always great viewing for those getting good and angry around this time of year.
"Gus: You know what this family needs? A mute."
