Wow. I can see why the studio shelved this movie for over a year and then never released it. It's not the most unfunny or worst thing I've seen all year, but it's pretty close.
The whole movie has this 'King of the Hill' cartoon comedy vibe (and not in a good way). You know, that quasi-hillbilly Texas, faux-Republican humor? Ick. it's only funny in the cartoon. And every secondary character from 'Office Space' had a cameo? Ugh, was I the only person that thought 'Office Space' wasn't funny?
Anyway, the running gag gets old REAL fast, fortunately it's only 80 minutes long, so it's not that long to suffer.
Listen, I don't wanna come off as the pretentious asshole here. No one more than I knows that humor is subjective at best. That being the case... we have all had jobs. Boring jobs, meaningless jobs, jobs in which your co-workers and/or bosses are idiots. So, 'Office Space' isn't funny, because thats what fucking happens when you go to work.
The 'flare' thing was funny? I had a job at an amusement park one summer where I had to adorn this second rate Mickey Mouse outfit and sweat buckets on the weekend. So - it's funny because she had to wear more buttons? I had to wear a giant plastic head for 6 hours standing in the sun. That's not funny - that's more sad than anything else. And who hasn't wanted to destroy a piece of office equipment? Or been in the constantly chaging slow lane in traffic? The Michael Bolton name gag? Not only is that not dull, it's not clever - his name might as well have been Ucker Cox (get it?)
I'm sorry folks, I'm just tired of people trying to convice me that 'Office Space' is funny 'cause it ain't. It's right down here with Jeff Foxworthy or Larry the Cable Guy humor.
How I make Larry the Cable guy funny: sit back with my third or fourth lemon drop and listen to one of my friends wax on about how cute he things Larry is. [Yes you read that right, 'he'.] And then I think about how a potential redneck like Larry might feel about that.
Well I think it is funny. Obviously there is something funny about it if some many people think it is. I doubt they are pretending it is funny. It may be one of those movies like The Royal Tenebaums, where you may or may not like it. I love that movie. Alot of people hate it and thinks it is boring. Same thing here.
I think in the whether or not Office Space is funny it can be decided like this, Everyone likes what they like, I know a lot of people that thought Borat was so funny and I hated it. But I like Office Space and I think it's funny, but that doesn't mean other people will and I won't convince them that it is funny because they'll like what they like.
I liked it, but then again, it's one of those movies you either love or hate, much like anything Mike Judge makes. If you hated everything he made in the past, you'll hate this on.
Ok... maybe Office Space isn't hysterically funny. I would tell you what movie I think is my alltime fav. comedy but then I would be dating myself, and I just can't go there right now.
So it's not so much OS is funny, but its that somebody made a movie that accurately depicts my work experience so somehow I feel like somebody else can feel my pain...I experience the empathy of the creators when I watch it... even tho' probably no empathy wasn't involved, they were just trying to make a fast buck.
