Anyone seen it? I've heard it was awesome but they kinda over played the whole "slow motion" and stop motion stuff. Other than that i head it was kick ass to the nth degree.

I think Todd should review this next! Heard it was kinda violent-yet-detached in the way of comic books [and it was taken from a comic book so not sure why this would be a surprise].

Not sure about the subject matter but visually looks really interesting. Todd! What say you?

Saw it. Pretty good. The theater I was in stood up and clapped. I thought it was okay. For a movie that relies entirely on its visual flair, it had exactly one trick, and it used it the entire movie. Sure it looked cool as hell the first 20 minutes, but it really lost its luster by the end. Remember how by half way in to the second Matrix, bullet time was no longer impressive, at all? Yeah, same thing.

3/5 cookays.

Yeah, I thought that the movie was pretty good. Allthough it was pretty much just about kick ass and kicking more ass, if your in that kind of mood it hits the spot perfectly. But if your looking for a deep story line with alot of emotion it wont deliver as much as the ass kicking will.

Thought it was awesome

You need to watch it knowing it was based on a comic book, because it has that kind of feel, with the lighting and the over the top bad guys. It's really flashy and visually stunning. If you like action scenes with lots of carnage you'll love it. I thought the slow motion stuff worked well because the fighting was so fast it helped you see everything that was going on and exactly how skilled the Spartans were. I do wish they had given at least one long cut of one guy taking down 15 consecutive enemies without slowing it down at all, but seeing it speed up and slow down is still pretty cool. Don't go looking for a great dramatic story, because the plot's pretty basic and well known, but if you wanna see a visual spectacle I highly recommend it.

I heard Iran's President didn't like this movie because it's anti-Persian.

To me, that is a good reason to go see it.

Ehh it does seem a bit propogandaish. I mean the Spartans are these golden dieties and the persians are all deformed and hideous but that is true for any easy to pick out good vs bad movie. It does seem to have come out at the most perfect time ever. At the height of comic book movies, ESPECIALLY Frank Miller, and during a strong anti-muslim sentiment growing in the US. Now the 70 Mill doesn't seem too far fetched. Still I liked what I saw, and it was a bad ass comic.

Javad Shamaqdari, a cultural advisor to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said 300 was "plundering Iran's historic past and insulting this civilization".

I think my point was, I find it highly ironic that the President of Iran would bash this film for being anti-Persian when it is plainly not meant to be taken as a historically accurate portrayal of events.  I have heard it is a heavily stylized version of a comic book.  He might have a leg to stand on if the director and producer of 300 tried to sell the film to the theatre going public as a docudrama or historical biopic.

And, it is doubly ironic when one considers that for Mr. Ahmadinejad a very recent event - the deaths of 6,000,000 people or more in Europe between 1939 and 1945 is a myth.

I'm not sure I want to see the movie all that much.  Saying I want to see it is sort of a way of thumbing my nose at an individual who is quite clearly a complete asshat.

I agree if they wanted to be a full fledged propaganda flick it would advertise itself as a fully historically accurate portrayal of the Greco-Persian war. But movies don't need to be advertised as historically accurate to be considered propaganda. The old Bugs Bunny cartoons about WW2 were propaganda, this to me is just a newer version of it. I like the old bugs bunny cartoons and I liked what I saw of the 300. I'm not saying they are bad pieces of media, on the contrary i think both are examples of pretty damn good work, I just think they are cashing in and furthering the stereotype. In Bugs's case it was germans are raving lunatics and japanese people have huge buck teeth and poor eye site, in the 300's case it's persians/arabs are blood thirsty and ruled by tyrants. Not saying I'm going to boycott the movies or anything just pointing out the effect it's going to have on people's view of the middle east.

I forgot to mention the fact that it's a remake of a comic book, in my opinion, doesn't change the propaganda aspect of the movie. Truth or fiction it really doesn't matter to an American public of whom 95% of them have never been within 1000 miles of the middle east. It's all fiction to them.

I think you are all fishing way too deep into this movie... Call it what it is; a movie where shit gets fucked up and people die. Also, awesome. If you want to make it political then by all means be my guest, just don't assume that that's the point of the movie. But hell, maybe i'm wrong. Who cares. The movie kicked ass and in no way did it make me think that Persians were less than men.... It made me think "I need to do a few more sit ups."

Todd your Nerdocity is peaking out... but yeah I heard that too the only thing is I don't think The Watchmen has enough action in it to keep an audience happy, it actually requires a little bit of thinking. Of course they could always add Tom Sawyer to it and call it League of Extrodinary Gentlemen 2 or something.

And for the 300 propaganda thing... I don't think it's about the story so much as it is when it was chosen to be made by the powers that be.
