Long movies vs. short [with deleted scenes on the DVD]

Well, I was GOING to go see Grindhouse in the theaters but after seeing that this movie is 3 hours and 11 minutes long, I just don't think I can handle sitting that long. Once again I will have to wait for the DVD and break up the viewing...luckily there are two movies so easy to find a place to pause.

Started thinking about this while reading the other Grindhouse posts, but I wondered what folks thought about watching a Long movie OR watching a short, conscisely edited movie and then catching the extra's and deleted scenes [which I really like watching] on the DVD.

Is it preferable in general for you to get the backstory during the movie, and potentially slowing down the momentum of the film, or perhaps risking a plot hole or two for a faster moving film?

Just curious...

Good point - personally, (if done properly) I LOVE long movies. That is, if the exposition, pacing and editing is done well. 'Pulp Fiction', 'The Departed', 'Boogie Nights' all run well over 2 1/2 hours - and are perfect examples of what I mean. 150 minutes? Hell, that's value, baby!

Now 'epic' movies - those running close to (or over) 3 hours, that I don't care for (or sould be shorter), 'Return of the King', 'Magnolia', 'The Green Mile', etc. WAY too much 'down time' in these, and boring parts that would have me itchy in the theater.

As for the 'bells and whistles' on DVDs, I am all about that. Those and 'easter eggs' I read somewhere, that if you press the right buttons on the menu screen of 'The Phantom Menace', you have the option to watch 'Return of the Jedi' in it's entirety.

I'll have my cake and eat it too!

I don't know if it's because I'm a girl and I'm starved for girl activities around all the boys I hang out with, but I actually liked all the girlish banter in Grindhouse. I'm thinking it was the only real "downtime" that Grindhouse had.

Anyway, I agree with Marc Daniel; as long as the movie is interesting, I'm all for getting my monies worth. The longer the better!

I'd also like to get a ton of extras with the DVDs; make a day out of it!

Gah, you should really go see grindhouse in a theater! Those movies were MADE to be watched in a theater filled with people laughing, cheering, shouting, and booing (when the management loses a reel It makes up for sitting there for a few hours.
