Movies...I love 'em. Anytime I can escape the mundane soul-destroying drudgery of my life through watching the adventures of fictitious characters on film- well, so much the better. Basically, great movies come from great writing. And I don't care if it's a zombie flick (I love zombie flicks, I guess because there is no negotiating with zombies 'cause they're just mindless flesh eating blood suckers whereas like, vampires at least talk to you before they suck your blood...) ahem. ok, where was I? It doesn't take gajillions of dollars to make a good movie. It doesn't take extraordinary actors or directors. It does however take good writing. And, sorry to all the Spidey fans out there, but Spiderman 2 and 3 lack good writing. The first Spiderman was good because we all root for the underdog and Peter Parker is as underdog as it gets. Unfortunately it is difficult to empathize with the pain of the character in 2 & 3 as the writing is not strong enough to create the reality that he is actually suffering. And that's boring. And what's with all the special effects in Spidey 3?!? We saw all that sand action in The Mummy; it was innovative and exciting then but been there/done that now. Where have all the good screenwriters gone? Wake up Hollywood, if you didn't have writers you wouldn't have movies. I have heard producers say they don't need writers, anyone can write a screenplay, all they need is ideas and ideas are a dime a dozen yada yada yada.
Okay, I concede. It is however, in the execution of that idea, of putting the words to paper that bring a movie to life, that touch our hearts and change us forever. Who can ever forget those movies that helped them during their life? The story of the underdog that makes it...the two people who fall in love against extenuating circumstance...the hero who stands up for what he believes in...perhaps dies for his cause...I don't know about you, but I have taken encouragement and inspiration from many a good movie during my dark nights of the soul.
I do believe there are good screenwriters out there.
Thank you, to all the great writers who have given us such wonderful films. |
