Ok movie boarders (kinda like wakeboarders except with a keyboard) I have a question for yous guys. I'm reading Dune right now, almost done with it, and it prompted me to take a peak at the long time controversy Book vs Lynch vs Sci-Fi mini series. Which one is better? Is one of the film adaptation better as a standalone movie/mini-series but not faithful to the book? Are Lynch's "Artistic License" changes really necessary?
I don't know which of you guys has seen/read Dune and if you have if you even care, but I think it's kind of a classic debate that I don't remember covering around here (I probably should have searched a little before I posted...) Well to those Lynch\Dune\Sci-Fi fans any thoughts? Is the mini-series worth the 6 hours? Is the Dune Director's Cut worth the 25 (or so). All I can say for now is that I remember liking the movie, but being slightly confused by it, and up to this point the book is pretty dern good.
Turk - yes, the book IS dman good. Evidently, it was THE book to read in the 60s (both of my ultra-square parrents even read of it) As for the Lynchian movie version? Well, it's so good, my buddies and I made a drinking game about it (it's posted on my myspace blog, but I'll post it here too - you lucky, lucky people)
So why not turn a mundane 'Holiday Weekend' into an unapologetic 'Lost Weekend'?
When the Disney Channel would show that crapola 3 hour version (4 hours with commercials) of David Lynch's cult masterpiece, 'Dune', my buddy and I from Boston made a drinking game out of it (you can make a drinking game out of ANY movie, but we thought this was clever - or whatever passes for 'clever' in your early 20s) Ah, youth! (Note: I don't recommend anyone over 30 attempting this)
Well then, view the trailer (to whet your appetite), then view the 'rules', rent 'Dune' - and prepare to get 'Lynched'!
Whenever the word 'spice' or 'melange' is uttered. (Note: this rule only applies for people with giant, football sized livers)
Take a 'normal' sized drink:
Whenever anyone speaks with their own whispering inner voice Whenever Paul whines Whenever Gurney gets pokey Whenever Dr. Yueh starts whimpering Whenever the Baron starts yelling
Take a BIG drink:
Whenever the name 'Kwisatz Haderach' is spoken Whenever the wormlike Transporter from Ix is on screen Whenever Alia (Paul's sister) speaks Whenever the phrase "The sleeper must awaken" or "The sleeper has awakened" is said
Finish your beer:
Whenever Feyd (Sting) speaks Whenever it rains
Now if you time it correctly, and moderate your drinking, you just might make it to the end - I never have... dammit.
Ha Nice I'll have to try it. Finished the book last night.
***** possible vague spoilers *****
I expected a huge climactic battle with enormous detail and large amounts of chapters dedicated to it. Instead it was no more then a side note in the story, like "Yeah there was a fight... Moving on..." type a feel. But I see how it works with the book and Herbert's style of writing, so it didn't bother me. Now that I think about it there was no real climax in the book. All of these confrontations were hinted at and never came to fruition and if they did, it wasn't emphasized at all. Kind of different from the norm but enjoyable.
****** spoilers over*********
A rewatch of the Lynch movie is next on my agenda, followed by a viewing of the miniseries, after that I plan on applying for my Duneology degree which should set me up for the rest of my life. Easy Street here I come.
