Went last night.
Unless you really, really can't stand U2, I'd recommend it. Couple of previews (in 3d) at the beginning for some 3d movies coming out this summer, Coraline from the director of Nightmare before Christmas using the same stop-motion, and Voyage to the Center of the Earth - which looked cheesy, but 3-delicious - so I'll be going.
If U23D is the future of movies, then it'll be pretty cool. The last 3D movie I went to was Spykids 3D a few years back. The technology has improved tons. There's no out-of-focusiness anymore, everything is crystal-clear and very natural. No headache inducing, things just not rightness. Just a very good effect.
As far as the actual movie - I do like U2 and did see them on this tour. They cut out a lot of songs, so it comes down to half a show's worth which is just fine for any casual fan, or someone just going to scope out the new 3D tech. Some of those song choices are questionable: Include Ms. Sarajevo but cut out Elevation?
What I did like about it, is that as a big fan of concert films and videos, including U2's, is that most of them these days try to keep a frenetic pace, and usually achieve this by fast-cutting, and editing a concert into a mish-mash of 3 second shots. Since this would ruin the 3D effect, this film is instead shot with lots of long lingering stable shot, nice crane shots, etc. that really let you take it in. Some of the shots of, say, the drum kit, are so amazing and crystal clear that you can actually see the liquid in the drummer's glass of refreshment on the little stand next to him vibrating. Other shots, because of the depth available with the effect, would otherwise not be possible in a regular film. There were not a lot of over-the-top stuff coming straight at you effects, but a few, so those looking for that got their money's worth - especially if you included some of the zingers in the Voyage preview.
If it's around you, I'd go to it just to see what's going on. For years they've tinkered with 3D, and for years it has been subpar and sent them back to the drawing board. I do think that they've really got it this time.
Now I'm wondering if this will transfer over to DVD's.
Over and out.
