My horse will be arriving this Wednesday (2 days from now), and I am getting conflicting answers from various veterinarians as to what to feed him when he first gets here. He is coming from Montana and will be brought to my home in Indiana. He is only used to pasture grass and alfalfa hay. He will not be worked very much, and he has never had grain. I am being told that we need to slowly introduce him to this pasture since it is a different environment with richer grasses, so start off with 1/2 hour a day for 3 days, then an hour for 3 days, and so on. In the meantime, keep him in a dry lot with timothy hay. Some people say I have to give him grain also. but if he's never had it, why start now? He is 3 years old. This is my first horse. Thanks for any information.
