I have a 16 year old cat with mild CRF, mild HCM, and controlled hypertension; he is not receiving fluids as he is not dehydrated. However, his serum and ionized calcium are both elevated. Vet thinks this is idiopathic hypercalcemia, and wants him to take prednisonole. (Cancer is unlikely) The cardiologist gave a cautious OK. But I am scared of it.
With dietary changes, I brough the serum calcium down from 14.9 to 13.5 in 13 days, and think it will continue to decline. Vet is skeptical.
Is there any other safe way to lower calcium values?
Thanks,
