Hi, Pandora,
Does your cat have regular type gum disease that people have (with bleeding and swelling, usually due to negligent tooth cleaning which causes plaque buildup, etc)...or, does he have a bright red ring around the bases of his teeth at the gumline along with a weird bad breath?
If it is the latter, it could be what is called Stomatitis...usually caused by an immune related problem....at which point, a smart vet should check the cat for any immune related diseases.
There are special Dental Vets...where do you live? There is one in Florida (see below)...if you have a dental vet in your area, telephone him/her first and ask if they specialize in stomatitis and ask exactly how they treat it in cats.
My cat has Stomatitis, but, so far, his problem is not acute. I treat him homeopathically, which also can be used for acute Stomatitis. If you have a Homeopathic Vet in your area, you could telephone him/her and 'interview' the vet in the same manner as I suggested above. I do this all the time now so I don't go from vet to vet to get the correct treatment.
See the website below for info on the Dental Vet in Florida, along with specific info on Stomatitis:
