I've been thinking of getting a pet for some time, but have a really small apartment. I was thinking of a turtle. Simple, easy to care for. Not very interesting, but it may be a matter of the type of turtle.
P.S. no bird is good. I 'birdsit' for my Mom when she's on vacation and both me and my wife can't stand the noise.

Turtles are so.......blah. My sister has one, and it bores me to death just thinking about it. What a waste of space.
Better yet, get a couple of gerbils. GOD did we have fun as kids with gerbils! Never understood why hamsters were more popular- gerbils didn't have all that extra fur that would trap poop and shavings, or those awful fleshy tail stubs.
Gerbils are more active and playful than hamsters. You drop a cardboard paper towel tube in the cage, and within minutes, the gerbils would get to work and chew the whole thing down to mulch. Drop a tissue in there, and they'd shred it into a soft, fluffy mass and make a bed out of it. Fun! Fun! Fun!
Until they got loose, THEN it was a ridiculous amount of time and effort catching them again.
