The only way to go is to adopt a rescued animal (dog OR cat). Might Mutts in Manhattan is a great organization that does a lot of amazing work (they usually set up a mobile adoption center on the south side of Union Square in the warmer months), or you check out Petfinder.org to locate a shelter / rescued animal in your area. Petfinder is cool because you can specify what type of animal (size, breed, coloring, age, etc.) you are looking for. And, once you find your buddy, it is of the UTMOST importance that you get him or her spayed or neutered as soon as possible. The exploding animal overpopulation problem is just horrific. Do everything you can to prevent more puppies and kittens being born. There are too many out there suffering due to the ignorance and laziness of humans.
