I have a JC Higgins .22 caliber Air Rifle that my fater gave me some years ago - it was given to him back in the 1950s. I've recently repaired the rifle (I used it a lot when I was young!) but went out looking for information on this little gem and couldn't find anything. Does anyone have any additional information on this rifle like when it was sold etc?
I think what you have is a variation of a 180. Crosman made these for Sears about 1957. It is a keeper.

I think he is right. According to the book "75 Years Of Crosman Airguns" page 73 1957 is when the J.C Higgins #283 was intoduced. On page 85 it says " also introduced in 1957 was the model 126.2830 which was a variation of the standard model 180. This model was replaced by the model 126.1931." Yours being a126.2831 puts it somewhere between the two.
And according to both "75 Years Of Crosman Airguns" and "The Blue Book Of Airguns" 3rd edition the Crosman guns sold as J.C Higgins and Ted Williams were the best the factory had to offer in terms of fit and finish.
hope that helped
