Vintage Red Rider

Just purchased at an estate sale a 111- model 40 Red Rider. From info on this site I can tell it is a pre 1942. This one has a forearm that runs the full length of the barrel.
My question is could this be a custom forearm or did they make them like this?

Sounds like a home made replacement.
