Good to see you guys out and about.
It's cooling off here and raining more these days.
I'm not much of a sports fan either, still sorry to hear about your teams, stevec.
I hope you didn't lose too much on them.
I am going to a local gunshow today, maybe something will follow me home. KD

The leaves are falling from some trees. The fall colors are really beautiful this year. No frost yet to kill them and knock them off with the rain.
I hope it drys out before cold weather moves in.
Glad to hear things are going well in school, keep up the good work.

Just a few gun topics
November 22 2009, 7:00 PM
Howdy from south Texas! I inherited a nice Daisy NRA Comm.179 pistol, a Buffalo Bill Daisy 1894 and a Daisy/Winchester wood stocked 1894. The Daisy/Win. is a real fun gun..and plays hell with woodpeckers! These airguns make an interesting western display for my cabin. I did some "wheelin'n dealing" trading awhile back and got my grubby old cowboy hands on a vintage 1910 made 1893 Marlin lever action rifle in 38-55. Had to replace the stock and crescent butt place, the firing pin..now is a great shooter! Real story behind this old shootin" iron from the Republic of Mexico....! Good luck, good shootin' JD
Wish you could send those troublesome woodpeckers up this way.
I live in town and the starlings give the redheaded ones stiff competition for nesting areas.
Here in Illinois most songbirds are protected except starlings and house sparrows.
When I got my first BB gun my 'job' was to exterminate all the sparrows around my grandfathers barns.
Shot a lot of them but never made a dent in the population.
Sounds like a neat old lever action, is ammo easy to get for it?

answer to ammo question
November 23 2009, 6:57 PM
No sir the 38-55 ammo is not really easy to obtain. In ancient lever action rifles such as mine...use caution! Don"t shoot modern loads for current made guns. I got my ammo from a reloader in Apache, Arizona. He was told it was for a 1910 era gun so when I fired the first round..a huge cloud of black powder smoke poured out the barrel! So he must have loaded 55 grains of BP in each round. The heavy octagonal( 26") barrel holds 'er down so recoil is mild. It makes my little Henry(blued).22 saddle carbine look like a toy! Cool.
Bet the black powder loads are fun to shoot, if you don't need to see the target soon.

UGH....Black powder...!
November 24 2009, 8:30 AM
I fired the old Marlin....just one time with those BP loads and it took 18 oily swabs/patches to get the soot out! So I am hoping to get some smokless powder loads of lower pressure suited for this old rascal. JD HAPPY THANKSGIVING and LORD BLESS TEXAS....and the GOOD 'OL USA !!

Sounds like you got some nice guns there sir. I bet the Marlin will be fun to shoot with some smokeless powder loads. I like powder burners but don't get to shoot them often. Well I'll talk to ya'll later. Thanks.

just stuff..

What is funny for me is getting used to shooting the Daisy/Winchester 1894 BB carbine. You have to manually cock the hammer after lever is worked. I am used to real saddleguns like the 94 Winchester,Henry & Marlin that hammer is cocked by the lever. Sometimes try for a fast woodpecker shot and forget to bring hammer back and think 'What the Helll....' And another thing I have a display case with several single-action co2 and springer model pistols of the 1950s -70s era. Lawmen and hunters seem puzzled, never heard of such guns before. Guess they arent old farts like I am!!
The current 38-55 cartridges are anemic by todays standards and are safe for the older firearms.
I've used black powder in my first year 1894 Winchester and then found out what a chore it was cleaning.
Lots of fun to shoot black powder, lots of fun cleaning up. KD

Why would you shoot Woodpeckers?

Woodpeckers
November 29 2009, 8:23 AM
I shoot 'em because they are very destructive to the utility poles at my place. They peck big ugly holes in porch posts at hunting camp cabins and corral posts. We have two types of the little devils. Large and a smaller variety. You can tap on rifle stock like a woodpecker and soon one will fly over checking it out and light on a limb nearby...then you pop the rascal.

No sir, SOME of the modern 38-55 loads are not safe in old rifles like mine. I talked to a leading manufacturer and was told"Do not use our ammo in your gun. Our ammo is very high pressure and suitable only in modern firearms." A friend blew up an old 1886 Winchester in another caliber. Think it was 45-90 not sure about that. Anyhow he suffered a badly torn arm and hand from the mishap. Plus ruined a high priced antique.
<<<I shoot 'em because they are very destructive to the>>>
Living somewhat isolated from REAL wildlife as most of us do it is easy to forget that wild animals and civilization often clash.
Where I live it was almost unheard of to see whitetail deer 40 years ago, now you worry about running into one on the highway (I got one a couple years ago) and they just love some of the high priced landscape plants some people have.
I have a picture of my grandfather with a golden eagle he shot, had a write up in the paper about it many years ago.
I suspect if I shot one today it would make the paper too, but the story would probably have a different slant to it.
When I used to visit my uncle, who lived in the country and had chickens back in the late 50's, my cousin and I were urged to shoot any large hawks we saw.
My mistake,I was thinking of Winchester 38-55 ammunition in my own first year Win 1894.
I don't shoot anything above black powder velocities and pressures in that rifle. KD
Some varities are protected by the Federal Gov. or state laws.
Sometimes silence is golden, sometimes it's not.

If I am be excused for a moment by getting off the airgun topics but here"s a TRUE little 'gun' tale; Back in the 1930s my uncle Herbert(died in the '80)had a small drilling rig and was hired to drill for oil in old Mexico. I have no idea just where in the 'Land of Manana' that was except had to have been deep in the interior. The location was a jungle and wild monkeys would get in every thing. Play hell with any food stuffs. Uncle would shoot the blasted things trying to protect the supplies etc.etc. One day an old, old weathered Mexican walked into their work camp wanting to speak to the 'Honcho'(bossman, patrone). Uncle Herbert being very sharp understood him quite well. He had something to sell. From an old burlap bag, the sunburnt wrinkled old vaquero pull out a gigantic revolver-an 1848 Colt Walker. All 4 lbs, 9 ozs. of cold steel. A relic of the Mexican American War that some U S Dragoon must have died yeilding in a long ago forgotten battle. There was a bit of metal broke off one side of the V sight on the huge hammer but nothing else seemed missing or broke. My uncle had spent all his money investing in the drilling/men"s payroll and so on and was could barely afford a Tequila at that moment.....the asking price was only SEVEN DOLLARS!! He had to pass on that deal. My guess is these days you would be mobbed at a big gunshow by collectors and maybe reap $ 50,000 -$100,000 for that BIG IRON!!
