Response to Definitely not at this point, and kids are 12 and 9...
Wow, I wonder what kind of intervention that was. Especially in a neighbourhood as safe as the one you described. I mean it's not like you were talking about some drug infested projects.
Don't get me wrong I'm like you when it comes to letting my little ones out and about. See my post above. I may have been joking about it but seriously, I am VERY anxious about when this time comes. And after hearing that very unfortunate incident about the little boy whose mom gave in and allowed him to walk and meet her halfway home and was kidnapped, etc. I can totally understand that the "fear" may still be fresh for some people but really, an intervention???
Oh boy. I think people should be allowed to parent how they see fit. I hardly think that any sane and GOOD parent would negligently put their kids at risk. I'd probably react like MM-IL to the intervention, even knowing that the intention of the other parents was good, but to make the mom feel bad about her decision even though I'm sure it wasn't intentional, at least I hope it wasn't intentional, I think was a bit rough on the part of the intervening parents don't you think?
Anyway, different parenting styles for sure. I've seen many a very young kid walking to school or standing all alone waiting for the bus, I've actually parked and watched to make sure that that kid got safely on the bus or if I was walking with my ds's I'd walk slowly enough to make sure that the kid got to their school safely. I feel like I'm doing my part - you know? "It takes a village"? Now that I'm going back to work in a couple weeks, I can only hope that someone else takes over the neighbourhood watch to help these kids get safely to their destinations. There are lots of parents walking their kids to school/daycare. I can only imagine that the parents, much like my single parenting friend who was a GREAT mom, just feel like they don't have a choice.
