My nephew just graduated high school and I gave him a card with 100 cash, but we are close. For distant family I think 25 cash for the middle school and 25-50 for the high schooler. It will be up to the parents if they want to let them spend it or put it in the college account, we put every penny we get as gifts into the college acct.
