Rash / Dry Skin / Redness around mouth from teething - anything to help?

My 13.5 month DD has a bad rash around her mouth. Seems to be from teething. It's quite dry up here in the Northeast and I think that is exacerbating it.

What can I put on it to help her. I think it's more cosmetic than painful/bothersome to her. But it sure looks back.

Will lotion burn her / irritate it more?
Can I put some type of diaper rash stuff on her face, that close to her mouth?

Any ideas? Thank you!

Going through the same...try Eucerin cream

November 7 2009, 3:15 AM

My 7 mo. old DS is going through the same thing. We just flew from DC to Australia and the long hours in the dry air on the plane made it worse. He looked like he had a red beard by the time we arrived here! I put some Eucerin cream on him and it really cleared up.

I was thinking Vaseline but

being near the mouth I think I would try a little olive oil. That way, if she licks it, it would only be a food product that she is licking.

Good luck,
Pink

yeah, I was going to suggest olive oil too. (bf ment)

we had that problem too and I rubbed some expressed milk on it and it cleared up really quickly. i also tried to keep it dry by wiping it dry when i could but that was hard. I'd rub the expressed milk on when she slept otherwise she'd refuse and it was a fight.
I used olive oil and that was good too.

DS was conceived naturally the cycle following a cancelled DE IVF, using my good friend's eggs. She was on the verge of hyperstimming.
DD's nat conception I attribute to using OPKs like a crazy nut, eating grapefruit daily and using preseed. also 5 cycles of TCM ending 2 cycles before that lucky cycle.

Aquaphor

November 7 2009, 3:12 PM

Love love aquaphor. I work in derm and suggest it all the time. Do not put a lotion, is will sting and if it raw enough a cream may sting too. I would take a washcloth, tepid water and hold it onto the skin as long as she will let you and then immediately apply aquaphor, or you can do vaseline. It is healing and will also protect the area from drool. If this doesn't help you can get some otc hydrocortisone 1% ointment and apply it, once would probably do the trick and just wait at least an hour before letting her use a pacifier if you use a topcial steriod because it needs to absorb and I don't want her to get it in her mouth.
