It is not that selfishness is bad. It is when the selfishness gets out of hand and doesn't even do the selfish person any good. It is neurotic or insane.

Whats to explain Selfishness is a trait characteristic of a capitalist system it encourages one to accumulate what he doesnt need at the expense of others.

in communsim unproductive get money at expense of productive but in capitalism any exchange cannot be immoral because it happens by mutual consent. Secondly, selfishness is a survival trait and cannot be left behind. Thirdly, any action taken by human body is dictated by his body and brain to further his survival. There is no such thing as selfless deed.

I can't disagree more. I help people all the time with no thought of repayment of any kind. I expect to repayment for services and feel good about helping a friend.I have helped perfect strangers broken down on the road and more.I once raised money to help a child in the filipines receive surgery to repair a cleft pallot. I kept my name out of it and made sure the money went were it belonged. In this I received nothing except the satisfaction of helping a child I will never meet. YOU ARE A COLD PERSON. I hope the rhetoric you write about is just that rhetoric.

I was not talking bout selifshness in materialistic terms. People help others either due to the satisfaction they get, due to lack of self esteem or dur to (often misplaced) guilt. What I wanted to say was that our body doesnt allow us to take a single step which does not enhance our survival. And esteem or satisfaction is as essential for our survival as anything else. And that is why every person is born and is bound to be selfish.

Selfishness is bad because it achieves nothing. Complete focus on ones self alienates others from yourself and you are forced to act completely independently with out help from others in society, and it is much harder to continue to exist with out the help of others. A more altruistic approach allows you to help others who in turn help you. This is a progressive mentality for society because everyone can see how their seemingly meaningless actions benefit them. Selfishness breaks the chain of altruism and is therefore regressive for society because people fail to see how actions that benefit only one person are worth while.

I derive a great deal of satisfaction from helping others. Although I tend to help those I can relate to more. For example I was born with a cleft pallot. I tend to put energy into helping kids with the same. I teach them Karate or talk with them about the surgery. My daughter is autistic so I do alot of work with special needs children. Its easy for some not to notice or be able to find time. I know someone at work who has said he only cares about himself and he won't do anything to risk himself for anyone. What a cold and lonely life that must be.
