I'm going to out myself -- I'm a progressive Democrat. I spend a lot of time checking out progressive blogs and forums. This is my first time on a conservative forum, and the first time I have been attacked by pornography ads while entering a blog or forum. The hypocracy is just unbelievable. Anyway, here is what I wanted to post. I'm curious to find out what varieties of rotten tomatoes come back.
I think Democrats could be doing a better job of promoting the Democratic party by educating voters about the difference between progressives and conservatives and the roles we have played in the history of our nation.
Somehow we aquired the label "liberal" to contrast with "conservative." As in "spend money liberally" versus "spend money conservatively." We have redefined ourselves as "progressive," which I find much more appropriate. Progressives believe in new ideas and a better future -- we believe in progress. Conservatives cling to the status quo and even try to pull us backward.
Looking at these two very different attitudes in the context of our history, we can clearly claim the great leaders of our past as our own political ancestors. For example, who but progressives would believe, in the 1700s, that a modern democracy was possible and that the colonists could create a democratic union? What were the conservatives of the time thinking and doing? By definition, the conservatives were resisting such a bold idea for change.
Another example: Who but progressives would fight to free the slaves? Who but progressives would fight to give women and African Americans the right to vote? What were the conservatives of the day doing? By definition, they were resisting.
The story today is no different. Progressives are fighting for progress. The conservatives are holding on to old ideas and fighting for the status quo.
Our political parties have gone through radical changes in our nations history, but we have always had progressives, and we have always had conservatives. Todays progressives are in the Democratic party.
I would like to see Democrats create a television ad to educate the population about progressives and conservatives in our nation's history. We can then ask them to join with the true leaders of our nation by joining the Democratic party.
