Mr. President: Export Goods Not Jobs

January 31, 2002

REFORM PARTY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
3281 North Meadow Mine Place
Tucson, AZ 85745

Tucson, AZ.—“Listening intently to the State of the Union, as were many Americans, I was disturbed to see the President once again determined to export American jobs to foreign soil,” said Gerry Moan, National Chairman of the Reform Party USA

“Have no lessons been learned from the recent ongoing recession?” Moan asked. “While the rest of us are hit with lay-offs and salary cut-backs, the President and members of Congress have asked little about the reasons for the deteriorating job base in this country. Currently there are 1.4 million reasons. Those reasons are lost manufacturing jobs that have affected entire communities. One would ask, ‘Why this sell-out?’”

The RPUSA says the answer is: Republicans and Democrats alike are quick to shut down industries that built this country in return for corporate contributions from greedy merchants that care more about international profits than America’s domestic security.

Robert Belcher, RPUSA Executive Committee member and Alabama State Chairman said, “The statistics do not lie. NAFTA and GATT have not produced the promised results. Instead the U.S. is left with huge trade deficits which have actually set us back and weakened our economy.”

Beverly Kidder, RPUSA East Coast Regional Media Director, added, “We applaud the President’s handling of the War on Terrorism and the recognition that the U.S. must return to self-sufficiency by making use of domestic energy resources. When will the President also see that the same principle applies with trade? In order for the U.S. to remain a strong force in world economics, it must also be self-reliant in its domestic manufacturing policy. No country in the history of the world has ever survived without a strong manufacturing base.”

Pat Buchanan, Reform Party presidential candidate in 2000, and Pat Choate, Reform Party Vice Presidential candidate in 1996, have both eloquently cited the history of free trade and its potential destruction of the diminishing middle class. “Democrats and Republicans have been too busy to care while taking contributions from the likes of Enron,” Moan explained. “Perhaps our supposed Representatives of the people will wake up when they see the ‘For Rent’ sign going up on their own soon-to-be vacated offices.”
