Ok I have a few questions, and would very much appreciate your help.

I am from New Zealand, and have been engaged to a Brazilian girl for the last year while she lived in NZ with me & studied.

I have been in Brazil for 8 days, and am enjoying it very much. Luckily I have the support of her parents and am not having to pay for anything at all.

The problem is, I am turning 19 this month, and she will be 17 in March. I know this may sound all too young, but we have a great relationship and seriously believe we can make it work despite what everyone else thinks.

I´m currently on a 90 day visa, which I am entitled to extend to 180 because I haven´t been here before. That gives me 6 months, and I was wondering, if I went to Australia and tried to get a visa on my Australian passport (I have citizenship of both), would there be any checking with the government in Brazil or does only the issuing embassy hold this information ? Maybe this could work, and that would give me 1 year, but I suppose it isn´t so easy.

Her parents won´t give us permission to marry because of their principles, and this makes it very difficult being underage. I left my half completed computer science degree to come and find some way to live here while she completes med school in SP.

I have read about emancipation certificates, which allow 18 yr olds to do various things including owning property & marriage. Does anyone know anything about these and are they legitimate ?

I higly doubt I will be able to aquire a decent enough job to get a work visa, but am hopeful in finding some way to stay. Should it not work out, she will leave her studies and marry me in New Zealand or Australia at 18 yrs old - We have better laws there !! I want to do this right though, without losing the respect of her parents

I can´t really afford to study here, I guess it would be very expensive to get any sort of training in English, and Portuguese courses must be costly too.

I´m so worried that I will have to leave her. Please help me.

Muito obrigado

Hi Woody-

What a story! Makes me feel young again and brings back some good memories... Then I was mostly chasing local girls without having to deal with any visa questions etc and I wasn't that anxious to marry them either

Actually, I would recommend waiting some and just trying to enjoy your stay in Brazil and, of course, the lady of your dreams. If you spend more time getting to know her and her family, you might find a solution to the situation without having to resort to elaborate immigration or international abduction schemas.

Seriously, give it some time, let's say a month and let's touch base after that. If you are still in the same situation then, we would then discuss a few possible legal moves you could do to alleviate the pain.
