I was just curious...

Aside from Ipanema, Leblon, and Copacabana, what other neighbhorhoods in Rio have the lively atmosphere of cafes, restaurants, night clubs, internet cafes, etc...all within walking distance of the beach?

I noticed that areas like Flamengo and Leme can get a little dangerous, with a higher incidence of crime and shootings. But the high real estate prices of Ipa/Leblon is making me look else (perhaps even another city all together).

Thanks.

I personally prefer Petropolis. The downtown and historical Center are lively and charming. The crime rate is lower and people are a lot nices then in Rio.

Itaipava and Araras neighborhoods just about 20 minutes from the Center are paradise-like, but have more of a suburban feeling to them. Then, there are no beaches there.

In Rio, Urca is probably a safer bet with fair number of restaraunts and bars.

There is no other city in the world like Rio. Unfortunatly, the crime problem comes along with the charm of the ´cidade maravilhosa´

Boris,

Really? I have never been to Petropolis. I know it is about an hour from Rio by car, but what do you like about it? Is there enough "going on" to make it an exciting and enjoyable place?

I know Urca, but I get a little worried when you get closer to the Centro.

I am finding a few 2-3 bedroom places in Leblon for about 100k US, which is high but not crazy. Unfortunately, while it is easy to make monthly payments for several years with the newer lancamentos in Sao Paulo, I imagine this is tougher to do with Rio properties.

Petropolis is really worth a visit. Especially the residential areas, such as: Itaipava, Araras, Fazenda Inglesa, Rocio, Pedro do Rio...

The place has perfect climate, spectacular views, nice people, low crime rate, and plenty of charm... and as you´ve said - it is only a little over an hour from Rio.

There are plenty of activities to keep one busy. Anything and everything.

Urca is a lot safer then Leblon or Ipanema. There is a military college, Navy base, and quite a few high-ranking military officials living in the area, hence the high level of security from which the mortal residents of the area also benefit.

Ditto on having hard time financing in Rio. São Paulo´s Real Estate market is a lot more user friendly then Rio´s.

I'll have to try out Petropolis during my next trip. I love the street "scene" of Ipanema and Leblon, i.e. the ability to walk to countless stores, restaurants, and cafes...with a few bars and night clubs thrown in.

Do you think Urca is the best alternative to Leblon and Ipa in Rio? I've heard some shady stories about Flamengo as told to me by a few Brazilian football players, so I'm a bit hesistant on that area of the city myself.

Work may very well force me to Sao Paulo, where I'm sure I'll grow ever more pale and stressed. As you said, it is a lot easier to buy property there. But the prices are quite high, and you're paying for a view of skyscrapers and paved concrete!

Know anything about Fortaleza Boris?
