hi boris
so, i'm planning to move to brazil in a year or two, and am trying to figure out, after i buy a home, how much i will need in income, per month, to survive. i don't need material things except phone, & dsl...i'm talking bills, food, just plain living expenses. i won't have a car, and i am looking to settle outside rio, so small town prices.
can anyone give me a guesstimate? ballpark figure?
thanks,
rk

The only available source of information on opening small business in Brazil is the local equivalent of small-business administrationin the United States - SEBRAE. They publish booklets and provide training. Needless to say, it is all in Portuguese.

There are no do-it-yourself enterpreneur books in Brazil.

hi boris
so, your book is $20, but with membership, there is a "free activation key" for this ebook. does this mean that if i become a member (which i was planning to do anyway) i can read the book for free? i'd rather do that, if that's how it works.
thanks
rk

It depends. One can fairly comfortably live in Rio or São Paulo on about R$2,000.00 per month. Of course, one can live significantly better on this funds in a smaller city. This sum is a fortune for an average Brazilian family of four.

I disagree with Boris. You cannot live here like a king for the amounts he said. I have a very luxurious life here but it costs much more.
- two maids (one live in and one out) - R$ 1500.00 pm
- one gardner - R $900.00 pm
- one cook - R $1000.00 pm
- one assistant - (speaks english) - R$ 2000.00 pm
- house - R$ 12,000.00 pm
- Electric - R$ 1,000.00 pm
- water - R$ 350.00 pm
- Security - (twenty four hours per day) - R$ 5,900.00 pm
- one Driver - R$ 2500.00 pm

and you have food, gas, going out, furniture, and all the other things you need and want to buy. My girlfriend is also Brazilian and I just asked her about the R$2,000.00 comment and she said, " yea if you want to do nothing and go nowhere...no way".

Just thought I'd let you know another perspective. I have spent in excess of $200,000.00 since I got her a year ago.

Hi Rob,

Thank you for your input. Actually, I agree, my estimates are modest, but then they are geared towards 99.99% of foreigners who live and work in Brazil.

While we have some very well-to-do clients who are worth millions if not tens of millions of dollars, none of them spend that much money down here in living expenses.

The prices you pay for various services seem to be very reasonable...

Most of our clients own their properties in Brazil, have one maid, and do not use private security, cooks, or gardners (mostly apartments).

Regards,

Boris
