Hi,
I will retire in 3 years, and want to buy a farm outside Salvador and build an orphanage. The residents would mainly be homeless kids. They could stay and eat, but everyone would have to do their share of work. I want to give them a place to live, food, and educate them to be able to go out and get a job once they are old enough. I own a horse farm in Tennessee USA at the present time, but will be selling everything here. I want to do this in about 3 years. I am just now starting to do my research on what this will take. Can you give me any advise?
Thanks
Marion

Congratulations on your commendable intent to set up an orphanage.
I hope that you are aware that it is simply not enough to provide homeless kids with a place to live and food.
Do you have any experience in this kind of work? Are you able to deal with violent behavior, drug and substance abuse... and some pretty hairy personal experiences that had at some point undoubtedly deeply traumatized the children.
Without experience, professional assistance or support network, you will run a great danger of not only personal risk, but also potentially doing more harm then good to the very children you are trying to benefit.
Are you able to communicate sufficiently in Portuguese? Do you know Brazil well? Do you have adequate resources to finance your orphanage?...
There are thousands of questions to answer and hundreds of potential legal, financial, logistical, and psychological problems that you must be able to deal with in order to make your dream come true.
If I may suggest, try to contact one of the many NGOs (like Save the Children) that have centers in Brazil. They will be a much better resource.
Best of luck,
Boris

I went to college to be a missionary but have never made it. I have taken a lot of courses in child behavior, and have worked a lot with kids that have deep rooted emotional problems, and drug abuse. However, there are a lot of different circumstances that I am sure that I will come across for the first time. But, I will just have to deal with them in the best manner that I know how. Currently I have a horse farm in Tennessee. And, every other Saturday a local cancer hospital brings out 4 terminally ill children to ride, and pet the horses. I also have llamas that they pet. This is sorta like the Make a Wish Foundation.
As for the backing, I have two different Church orginazations that are going to back me financially.
I have only been to Brazil twice. Each time I rented a car and drove many miles out into the country. I came across a lot of homeless children looking for food. I said that someday I would come back and do my little part.
I will retire before I come down, and will get a modest retirement of around $2,000 a month. I should be able to pay my personal expenses with that, shouldn't I?
Thanks for your comments.
